Lena, thanks for clarifying that. i can't help but look back at my year abroad in madrid and think that maybe middlebury should apply the undergrad rules to the grads as well.

you see, so many grad. students lived with others in the same program.

i was lucky enough to have a room waiting for me when i arrived and i lived with 4 spaniards who did not speak english and did not really want to learn either.

the ideal situation Big Grin

saludos,
jer...

Well those of us who are not Anglo (but yes, American), and who have been speaking Spanish for years qualify as potential grad roomates! Im also looking for roomates/flatmates who will not be speaking English all the time, so let me know if Midd housing is open to outsiders :-)

Gata, that sounds cool! I'm sorry I don't have more details yet, but I don't think info from Middlebury regarding Spain comes out till May sometime, so I don't know if I can plan where I'm going to live before then. When would you need to get a piso? My other question is, I think that the place where Middlebury has classes is near Puerta del Sol and Cibeles, is NYU near there? I thought I heard that it was on the outskirts of Madrid, but maybe I'm wrong? It would be lovely if we could work this all out though! Big Grin

NYU is nowhere near Sol. It's farther away in a very residential neighborhood. Not too far from Santiago Bernabeu.

Hi Hiramgirl-

Redwood is right, the NYU school is near bernabeu, but there is actually a bus from SOL that leads you almost to the door so i would be looking for piso in either area. i plan to arrrive in madrid early august to look. Keep me posted on your planes!

Kat,

There are actually 2 buses that almost take you to NYU's door.

The first is #51 which starts in Sol and the second is #7, which starts in Alonso Martnez. You now have two choices.

Just letting you know all options available to you.

GOOD LUCK,

Shawn

HiramGirl,
I answered the private message you sent by by way of another private message (you did not give me your e-mail address so that was the only way I could answer), but I see on my profile that you still haven't read my answer. Anyway, the answer to your questions regarding the calendar can be found on the Middlebury in Spain web page:

Lena, thank you for replying. I actually just got to read your message a few days ago because my computer keeps crashing, and I have a hard time getting on the internet. It's driving me crazy!!! I also just emailed you with my consulate information per your request. There's so much to do to prepare for the trip; I'm so excited about everything. So I will get to meet you at Middlebury during the summer? I think that's what it said in the packet I just received. My other question is, since I'm going to be a student soon, does that mean that from now on I should only write to you in Spanish? Big Grin

Yes, I will be in Vermont during the last half of the summer session to hold orientations and do the registration for the students coming to Madrid.
Until you get to the Midd campus and sign the pledge communication with staff and faculty can take place in either language. After you have signed the Language Pledge all communication (except in emergency situations) will be in the language being studied, in your case, Spanish. Do keep in mind that regardless of the Pledge, every time you use Spanish you are benefiting from it and your linguistic abilities are improving. Every time you use English (particularly when you could have used Spanish) you are loosing an opportunity to improve your Spanish. That is the reasoning behind the Pledge, thats why it works and that is why people improve so much when being immersed in a language 24/7. So yes, e-mail me in Spanish, for your own good! Big Grin
Let me remind you that this message board has sections in Spanish too, but those sections and threads in English should remain in English for the benefit of all who do not speak Spanish.
See you in Middlebury in July.
Can't wait to be back on campus and get a healthy sniff of that wonderful scent of Eau d'Vacaaaa! :jeje:

Okay, sounds good! I think what I will do is write you private messages in Spanish, since I have lots of questions that I don't need to bore everyone with here. I've never been to Vermont; I don't know quite what to expect but I've heard it's beautiful and full of nature, not quite what it's like here in dirty ol' Cleveland where I'm from! Red Face Thanks again.

Hello everyone, I havent been on this board for six weeks and I really missed it! I just came home a few days ago from the six week grad session in Middlebury and I only have a week till I leave for Madrid!!! It was an amazing experience in VT, so I can only imagine what the year in Madrid will be like. I just wanted to say thank you to Jer, Redwood, Lena, and anyone else on this board who encouraged me to apply to the program. I never thought I would make it but here I am!!!!

Middlebury people ...

Does anyone remember how much time passed after taking the placement test (online) before you received an answer from Middlebury? I got an email this past Monday that all my application materials had been received, and that I could take the placement test ... I took the test that night.

I realize that only four days have passed ... but I want to know NOW. Can you tell I'm antsy? Smiler

Hi,

I'm new to the board, and was wondering if anyone could help me out with some info/advice. I am going to be a senior at the u of chicago with a major in spanish lang and literature, and im doing my BA paper on Garcia Lorca. i spent last year studying at the uni of seville, and generally enjoyed the experience. I want to continue my studies with a masters, and then a doctorate to eventually teach at the university level. i have seen that some people on the board have ties to middlebury's program, and i was just wondering if anyone could give me some details about it, like if it costs a buttload of money, how i would need to apply, etc, and if anyone knows anything else about grad programs in spain run by US schools or grad programs at actual spanish unis.

thanks,

kevin
