Hi,

Hope this isn't a repeat of what other ppl have posted before, I didn't come up with much when I searched...

I'm an English uni student learning Spanish and Catalan, so I'd like to spend my year abroad in Catalonia. Even though Barcelona is appealing, I think I'd settle in quicker in a smaller place so I don't really want to go for a big city. One of the places I have provisionally applied to go to is Girona.

Just wondered if anyone had any useful comments or opinions on Girona and the surrounding area, or indeed anywhere else in Catalonia! I'd like to be fairly close to the sea but ideally near to the Pyrenees as well, since I fancy brushing up on my skiing in the winter!

I really would appreciate hearing ppl's views on the area or their suggestions for 'better' places to try! Cheers in advance!

i'm only a beginner in catalan but i know enough spanish, french and latin for catalan to be easy for me to read anyway. so thanks for that url, i had a look and it was quite interesting! :-)

but really i'm looking for real people's opinions or advice...tourism sights don't tell you anything realistic about what it's like to live in a place. i just want to try to get a feel for whether girona would be a nice place to live - does it have a lot of character, is it very very quiet, etc etc? so if anyone has anything to add about girona or other places to go/avoid, please let me know!

ta/muchas gracias/molt gracies,
lauren xxx

I know that this is not going to help you too much, but I know that several foreign cyclists live in Gerona, and I would say that most Americans in European teams live there. So, I guess this could only mean that it is a welcoming city and bike-friendly :-D Sorry for not having more information, but Gerona is the farthest province capital in mainland Spain from Madrid, so I did never have too much contact with it but on tourism.

sorry (NOT :jeje: Wink ) Shiloh, i deleted your post in cataln. you are not new to the board so you should know that on the english lang. forums you need to post either in english only of in both languages

feel free to re-post it in both cataln AND english.

rainbow84uk, i have been to girona twice, both times for the day only and while i really enjoyed the city, i can't give you much advice on what day to day life is like there.

saludos,
jer...

I lived in the province of Girona for a few months. If you're there specifically to learn catalan, it's a good choice because the city of Barcelona is full of tourists so you'll probably be speaking Spanish and/or English all the time. However, in my experience, some of the people there tend to be really stuck up towards people who DON'T speak catalan, even if you're a tourist, so keep that in mind. You won't be speaking much Spanish there. I was considering doing a degree there before I settled on coming back home to do it but when I was searching for information, I was told if I'm castillian dominant I would be able to attend courses in Catalan but hand in the work in Castillian.

I dont care about it either, but since it seems to be the most important thing here...you know. Its all in good East/West fun.
