Congratulations on your acceptance michelita! Just two weeks ago I received my acceptance from Middlebury for the masters program. I actually just sent my deposit in this past week. I'm glad that everyone has had good experiences with this program. I feel the same way about the 6 weeks in VT. I'm really not the biggest fan of VT cause I always feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere. Are you still an undergrad? Do you go to school in the area? I also plan on staying in Spain after my year in Madrid. I would love to meet up with anyone locally, or in Madrid who is willing to share details about the program.

I will be more than happy to talk with anyone who is doing the Middlebury program. It is always great to have some type of insight before going down a dark tunnel.

I will be there in June, so if anyone wants to know more about the program, Email me at sredwood@jsr.vccs.edu.

A great day to all,

Shawn

Hola amapola612! Congrats on your accpetance too! Isnt it so exciting to have a "ticket" to Spain in hand? I am an undergrad still, finishing up my last year at Boston University. Did you apply to any other programs, or was Middlebury your first choice? Have you recieved your aid package from MIddlebury yet? I am still waiting on that before sending in my deposit. Also, do you have any idea what 502 means....its stamped all over all the forms they sent me...not quite sure what it means though....hmmmm Did you study in Madrid before? I would love to get together sometime if you live in my area. Let me know! Enhorabuena on the acceptance!
Michelita

Michelita,

SPA 502 is a review of grammar and you will learn some new things. The book that we used, called MATERIA PRIMA, was geared towards how Spanish was spoken in Spain and it helped a lot. Get ready for some long hours of study and learning a lot. The program will take the knowledge that you already have and enhance it. I really enjoyed my Vermont experience, but not anything that dealt with Vermont itself. You are in the middle of nowhere.

I just sent you and another board member an Email about Middlebury and please ask away. I am here to help.

Shawn

Michelita, I'm finishing my last semester at UMass Amherst. I've never actually lived in Madrid, but I've visited for a couple of weeks at a time. I studied in Sevilla and Salamanca. When I'm home I live actually a litle outside of Boston. I was also placed in 502, but I just read Shawns e-mail and he talks about the class. I can't wait to get back to Spain. I have some spanish friends from Madrid here, so they're excited that I'm going there. I actually haven't heard back about my financial aid yet. I decided to accept this offer, because its the one I really wanted, and I can always take out loans in order to go. I also applied to NYU. They don't reply until march though, or at least thats what they told me when I called them. My friends over here have wanted to kill me all last semester for obsessing over Spain, and now that I'm officially going they just want to kill me more because I won't shut up about it. I would definitely be willing to meet up when I come closer to home.

Another update:
I just found out that I was accepted at NYU as well. However, they did not offer me one cent of financial aid. You were right Jer and redwood. Middlebury came through with a much better offer. So, Middlebury it isSmiler

Michelita,

Way to go. I knew that Middlebury would come through for you. I will be in Madrid in June and you, Jer and I can have a chat about Middlebury. I can't wait to meet you and once again, I AM VERY HAPPY FOR YOU.

Besitos,

Shawn

Well I for one am real interested in the NYU program, being a native new yorker, and interested in their certificate in Spanish translation program. NYU and Middlebury seem to be both very good, but with different focus and one is more geared to strictly language (Midd) and the other more on culture (NYU). NYU is also stronger in transatlantic (SPain-Latin America) topics and thats my particular area of interest. Ive heard from a few people that they dont like giving financial aid tho, does that include loans? I have just a loan package at Georgetown where I am a grad now, so it doesnt make sense that NYU would be different and refuse to grant federal loan aid and work study. Also, what kinds of things do you Middlebury alums or NYU alums go off and do? Im interested in translation and ESL/Spanish as a Second Language work.

yet another question...are there any residencias de estudiantes that you guys recommend in Madrid? IF I were admitted to the NYU program, they are located in El Viso (where is that, by the way?) and I would like to research that area of Madrid. How far from the center? Im so excited about the possibility of transferring out of dreary DC and going back to Mad.
Confused
