Hey, long time no posting on this forums, guess it is still too early since 2012 is still way off.
I thought this was a huge development (which by the way has kept this forum alive) and needed to be posted.
Today, the "Comit Olmpico Espaol" (Spanish Olympic Committee) voted Madrid over Sevilla as Spain's candidate for the 2012 Olympic bid The vote was...
 Madrid = 157 votes.  Sevilla = 103 votes.
Still some pretty tough competition like NY (the favorite), London and Paris but Madrid is a huge step closer today to hosting the 2012 summer games.
In 2005 the final decision will be made on the host city for 2012.
Yeah, it would be cool if they won. I drive by the 'Peineta' stadium everyday where they would hold a bunch of it and the round about in front of the stadium has the now familiar Madrid Olympic 2012 (or 'Madrid 2M12') red flame there for everyone to see.
Madrid will now have to compete with New York and Moscow which have already entered bids. London, Paris and Rio de Janeiro are other possible contenders while Germany also plans to submit a bid.
The deadline for submission is July 15. The winner will be chosen by the IOC in 2005.
New York's going to have a bit of a sentimental push to it I believe. I like Madrid over Paris and London, but they're both larger cities. We'll see what happens.

I have talked on 2M12 with people from different countries and they find Madrid's bid as the ideal one, but the members of the IOC do not always vote the best. For the future I would suggest the EU presenting a common candidate to strengthen it.
Maybe Madrid will have finished all of the OBRAS by then. We shall see.
This may sound weird and I am not here to start an argument, but I hope that New York doesn't get it. Yes, September 11 was a major impact in NY, but I hope that they (THE OLYMPIC COMMITTEE) make a choice where reason and logic comes into play.
Outside of September 11, there has to be a better place to host the Olymics.

Bummer.....I was really hoping that Sevilla would get the 2012 bid so that my dream of having an international airport in Sevilla would finally be fulfilled.....
Being an Upstater, if NY wins the Olympic bid, what people don't realize, is chances are next to none that they'll be held in NYC! There's no space there! It would be upstate NY, who knows where, but since people always think of NY as NYC and its not exactly the same!
I'm glad Madrid won over Sevilla, as Sevilla got the World Expo not so long ago, we've got to spread out the events! 2M12!!!!!!!! I'm all for it!

Long time no write. I realize that there is a distinction between NYC and NY STATE. I just don't think that any part of NY deserves the Olympics at all. Just a personal statement that really isn't up for debate. The way that I feel is just because SEPT. 11 happened in NY, sympathy, for me, does not rule over clear judgement.

I know! I've been out and about! Currently I'm working on my personal quest and am going to take on one of the Spanish Consulates! Wish me luck!(I'm working with the theory that if I whine enough, they'll do what they're supposed to!)
Back to the topic: I don't mean that YOU don't know the difference! I just mean that people in general think that NY and NYC are the same small island- people forget about Upstate and its beautiful. (Don't get me wrong, I love the city too! )Actually, Upstate did have the Olympics.. winter olympics ( I forget what year) at Lake Placid. And I agree with you, I don't think the sympathy card has a play here.
Even though Spain had the olympics not so long ago... Since the US is bigger and I think will have more opportunities than many other places to host them, I'm rooting for Madrid! Besides, we did make a bit of a mess with the last bid for Utah and I think that will leave the US blemished for a bit- 9/11 or not!
I envy anyone who gets to go to Greece next year to see anything! The olympics at home! Wow!
