Any talk of Olympic bids is veering dangerously close to the political arena, no? In which case my money is on Moscow, because Russia has been out of the spotlight for a while and 'checking in' on them may be deemed wise. None of the other contenders need rounding up with those good ol' Olympic lassooooos. Vorsprung durch geopolitics, as they say in Germany.

According to the many articles I have read, the bids for Paris and Madrid are tied for first, Moscow in third and NY is a distant fourth. At this time, Paris has a very slight lead over Madrid since Barcalona hosted in 92 and has been quite some time since Paris has.
However, with three European cities in the top four, they may split the vote and then NY may get the Olypmics.
Hard to see that there is room in NYC for the Olympics, however, Bloomberg, mayor of NYC, is trying to get a domed stadium built on the west side of Manhattan.
We will have to wait until July 2005 to find out.

Not sure if you heard but with the whole Prince Harry/Nazi costume debacle, supposedly London's chances for the Olympics have slid way down. May give Madrid a better fighting chance.

i do not want a city to get the olympics because another candidate screwed up but rather on it's own merits.
if this racism keeps up, (first the spain soccer match and now little harry), it will be like choosing the best of the worst or the lesser of all evils for 2012.
Michael Howard (the leader of the Conservative opposition party in Britain) has set out to make immigration controls a major plank of his election campaign. Add this to the general anti-European and xenophobic attitudes that will surface as a consequence of these discussions and Britain will not show a good face to the world over the next 6 months (or until the election). For every sensible letter or interview that talks about sensible controls there will be extremists calling for total stops to immigration and even forced repatriation. I think that London will not be a major contender for the Olympics.

I quite agree with you, it is pretty depressing, however, it shows that there are many factors taken into account when choosing the city for the Olympics.
