Hey all,
Jer reminded me of the word 'extranjero' in a different thread. About a year ago I was in Madrid having dinner with a good amigo at a very nice restaurant near Plaza Mayor. When it was time for postres of course I ordered flan - I can't get enough of it! When I ordered it the waitress made a comment to my amigo that I did not catch. He told me that she said 'Extranjeros always order flan.'

My question: is this a deragoatory term?

Muchas Gracias from an extranjero Wink who loves Spain.

Hey buddy, great topic for this forum.

I do not think the waitress was using the word "extranjero" as a derogatory term. It really depends on the word used and the tone of voice/situation.

There are many words used here for "foreigner"...

* extranjero - the most common term and not necessarily derogatory but can be if used in a nasty tone of voice.

* guiri - usually more derogatory and used more often to make fun of a foreigner. A "guiri" is a foreinger that looks and acts like a foreigner (you know, the bermuda shorts and the video and normal camera around the neck Big Grin ).

* Yankee - Americans and derog. or not depending on the usage.

If a Spaniard wants to insult you he/she will add an explicative to the word like...

* "cabrn de extranjero" ("cabrn"="bastard")
* "yankee de mierda" ("mierda"="shit")
* "guiri de los cojones" ("cojones"="nuts", not the type you eat either!)

... but if they just say the word itself, it is not necesarily meant to insult.

Saludos,
jer...

Hi!

In any case I think that "guiris" aren't bad foreigners and maybe people make fun of their clothes but don't hate them because they are peaceful and quiet.

What we don't like (and I supose that it happens in all the countries) are the foreigners that every summer go to Lloret de Mar. They are all young foreigners and spend all the night drinking and struggling on the streets. For me they aren't guiris so, we don't make fun of them, we just hate them. Razzer

Those vandals are not the tipical foreigners but due their actions now exists another expresion: "PUTOS guiris". It's a pity that their acts dirty the word "guiri".

"Guiri" by itself is not pejorative. I'd say that 95% of the people going abroad on tourism are "guiris" in the country they're visiting: you know nothing about the place. I guess I've been a guiri several times when abroad,... but never in Spain, even though my hair is red!

Hey, Max, for what it's worth: a fair number of Spaniards come equipped with red hair, perhaps from Viking visits or the various Goths or even maybe the "Wild Geese" who fled Ireland in order to worship as they wished and get some military training. I have red hair,too, but have always done my best to "fit in" with the clothing style, and speak Spanish quite well. I've never experienced the xenophobia Jer mentions in Barcelona....and really love that city(sorry Jer) but perhaps only because I haven't had a chance to really reacquaint myself with Madrid.

Re: the red hair, I was going to say that a whole family of redhaired kids lived near where I did on Jorge Juan 100!
