I was just wondering what are some common slang words for college-aged people in Madrid...words like "cool," "tight," "dope," or "that sucks," "that's too bad," etc....
thanks!

Ramoncin, a local singer, which mediocre talent and more popular for his participation on SGAE (our own RIAA) and getting them to charge a fee on all CDs and Recordings, has two books called "El Tocho Cheli" and "El Nuevo Tocho Cheli" which are regarding Spanish street slang. I checked in Amazon, but there both out of print, I am not sure if you can find them somewhere else.

I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.

I bought "Harraps Slang" from Amazon which might help.

I must say though, that the translations are British English, so they may not quite fit. Maybe the translations arent so good? For example:-

Me la trae floja - I couldnt give a toss
ser un feto - to be piss-ugly
Vete al pedo - bog off

uffff!!!
apart from all that everyone said, there are some differences between the "comunidades autonomas" and Andalucia has the most unbelievable slang you could imagine (i know we are in madrid but as madrid is sort of a melting pot you can hear anything!)
Also you have to be familiar with the phrases that compare one thing with another...like "eres mas feo que el fary comiendo limones" "es mas raro que un perro con dos culos""tienes menos detalles que un seat panda" "eres mas tonto que abundio, que vendio el coche pa comprar gasolina" "te mueves menos que epi y blas en una cama de velcro"...actually if you are funny and creative enough you can invent some of those!
And also de swear words...the tone is the most important thing( it's not the same saying "eres un hijo de puta" in a friendly tone refering a the new car your friend has bought, than saying "eres un hijo de puta" in a really pissed off tone to the guy in front of you in a traffic jam)

I offer myself to slang-swearing in spanish classes as i'm a pro!!! and have experience as teacher as my german flatmate can talk for 20 minutes just swearing and you couldn't tell she is not spanish!

cheers!!!

I think it depends on where you live... My friends in Madrid speak differently from my friends in Catalua who speak differently from my friends in Cantabria.

Me mola... I think thats more like "its cool" than I like.

Im not good at coming up with words off the top of my head even though I know a ton... What exactly are we classifying as slang, though? Like would the word "pega" in the sense of clothing going together be slang? Does the use of English as Spanish (poster, parking) count as slang?

a few more...

petardo - someone you dont like
crack - someone whos really good at something
me chifla - you like it a lot
