"Matrimonio de conveniencia", that was a film, wasn't it? But that refers to people marrying to get visas or something, not being forced to marry... Confused

Ok, this is a bit off what the topic became but I didn't want to start another thread when this title was perfect for what I'm about to ask.

Ok, I had an advanced class today that asked me the English equivalent of a couple of Spanish sayings.

The first is ithe direct English translation as i don't speak Spanish with them.
quote:
To bad weather put a good face.

Do we have a saying similar?

quote:
No te enrolles

The closest I could come up with was "Get to the point" or "Cut to the chase", but they insisted the meaning was different. Anyone?

And also one final question. Is it possible to make a verb a noun? For example with the word aclimate.

Thanks,
Bonnie

quote:

how about "turn the other cheek".

quote:
No te enrolles

it can mean many things depending on the context but get to the point is a roundabout one. get to the point would be more like "ve al grano" or "no te andes por las ramas" (or both together "ve al grano y no te andes por las ramas").

examples...

- if you are talking about something and giving them way too much info then they want, they coulde mean "stop talkin crap" die laughing

- if you are shopping with your sister and see a friend and stop to talk to them, your sister could say (as you go up to your friend if she has any tact) "no te enrolles" meaning "don't be too long (as in, don't talk too long with the friend as we have to continue shopping).

related usage (but different since it usually needs more than just "no te enrolles")...

- if you are flirting with a guy that your friend knows is no good for you, she can say "no te enrolles con ese tipo" meaning "don't hook up with that thing" die laughing eeker

so, you see it is not as cut and dry as one might think.

as for the verb to noun, yes you can with some but there is no general rule nor pattern (as far a i know) to do so.

for example...

- caminar (verb) = caminata (noun).
- comer (verb) = comida (noun).
- charlar (verb) = charla (noun).

as for aclimate...

- aclimatar (verb) = aclimatización (noun).

hope this helps brews

saludos,
jer...

I think this was the source of the confusion. I know it's possible to turn a verb into a noun in Spanish, but is it possible in English? If so I'm not familar with it so can you give some examples?

Muchos besitos de gracia

No, you've got the point. I never realized we had verbs that did that, aside from possibly to party= a party. How many verbs can you do that with?

Bonnie--
"to party" is a noun made into a verb. Transferring one part of speech to another like this is called anthimeria. So that one went in the opposite direction. Shakespeare did this extensively and created a lot of new words (I'll unhair thy head), so it is nothing new.

Other examples: to get carded, to impact (bad grammar, but still used), to creditcheck, to architect, to freak, to parent, etc.

Verbs to nouns:
to have a good cry
to go for a ride
have a sing along

And of course almost any gerund can be a noun: singing, barking, yelling, living...

Adjective to verb:
He weirded me out.

Adjective to noun:
What a weirdo.
