I've just read again what I wrote about "parida" yesterday. I wanted to mean that it might have something to do with giving birth (parto), but I'm not sure about that. I've just looked at the www.rae.es dictionary, and it may have another origin. I will go on this another day.

Another one:

-punto, puntazo: no regular Spanish equivalent. It is something surprising, very good, or both of them, or something similar. E.g. "Este to es un punto" ("This guy is very funny"). Sorry, I know how to use it, but I can't explain it any better.

Gracias Max.

I have also heard "punto" used to mean "detalle" as in "Qu punto!" which would mean "What a nice touch!" in English.

Literally it would be a "point", like saying that it is an added point or a bonus point.

Saludos,

Wonderful thread everyone!

One little definition addition, I've always associated the word 'pijo/a' to 'preppy' in English which goes both as a noun and adjective. 'Snob' is certainly correct as well.

And of course, you need to include the Spanish Preppies' key catch phrase as well: 'O sea..O sea'(Especially in Madrid) O sea is kind of the the old 'Valley-Girls' equivalent of 'IT'S LIKE...Oh my God!' or some another annoying comment of that sort. Big Grin

Hello!

Here you are a bit of Spanish slang! ... well, to tell you the truth I don't really know if some of them are slang or not but I just know that my mother would never say them Big Grin

- Potar / Echar la pota: to vomit
- Cagarla / La has cagado!: To do something really bad and now you must to afront the problem.
- Pifia / Menuda pifia!: It is just that you have done something really bad. Normally you end the prase with La has cagado!
- Pirarse / Abrirse: To go away. Yo me abro!. It's habitual to say "papiro" in the phrase "Yo me piro, papiro" because it rhymes.
- Rajar "Raja mucho" : To speak too much.
- Ser un Rajado: It is someone that doesn't dare to do something JUST at the last moment.
- Ser un cagado: It is someone that doesn't dare to do something (a coward).
- Lapo / "Japo": Echar un lapo: To spit.
- Picoleto: It's a derrogatory way to call a "Guardia Civil".
- Madero: It's a derrogatory way to call a "Polica Nacional".
- Cipayo: It's a derrogatory waty to call a "Polica in the Basque Country" because it means "someone thay sell himself to do bad things (hit others / to rob...) for money".

Bye!

I have just remembered another one:

-pea: gente (people) E.g.: "En el metro siempre hay mazo'pea" (There are always too many people in the "metro"). (Note: You have to realize that you never say the preposition "de" between "mazo" and the following name. Maybe I'm wrong, but even though this is slang, I would expect a "de" between "mazo" and the noun.)
