hey Willy, welcome to the forums.

i had only heard that word on one tv show here and it was used as an expression of surprise like "holy crap!" so i looked it up on the www.rae.es site and it seems that when referring to a man, it can mean...

quote:
2. m. Hombre torpe, zonzo, bobo.
3. m. Hombre grueso, rechoncho.

in case you need vocab help...

- torpe = clumsy.
- zonzo = silly or simple-minded.
- bobo = silly.
- grueso = thick (physically), big-boned.
- rechoncho = short and chunky.

so, i am hoping that she uses it as a term of endearment like "you silly chunky man" or something like that roll eyes

if not, i can recommend a few words for you to call her eeker die laughing

saludos,
jer...

My son was called this at school, and I took it to mean "dimwit", though my dictionary does give some rather more vulgar translations!!!

It can also be used just as "kid" in Central American spanish, so I reckon that's the most likely - let's hope so anyway big grin

we get along well and make jokes about our boss and stuff, so i asked her what it meant and she looked at me like she was suprised i didn't know.

I looked it up and found three meanings:
1.idiot
2.child
3.male reproductive organ... eeker

well can't say i would want to be called any of these, but lets hope she is calling me a child(even though im 18)...

Hi there,

It sounds to me like she means "kid" in an endearing way. However, I've only heard this word used in Spain in the third sense...in a song/joke for cell phones that one of my 11 year old's friends showed us.

However, Spanish is weird that way for sure (at least until you get used to it)! For example, they also used a word that literally means "male sexual organ" to call each other kinda like "buddy or pal" in the south of Spain. This word is "picha" (not sure if I've spelled it spelled right). They say the word "coño" all the time as a very light swear word, or say "coñazo" for something boring/unappealing...it literally means "cunt". There are many other examples...

However, at least in Spain, men tend to use these types of expressions more than women...
