Hola! I would like to know what music is popular with Spanish teens. I am back teaching Spanish (in Michigan) after being home with my own nios for many years. Also, what are the newest "catch" phrases that teens are using, if any?
Thanks for your help! Smiler

Hi Nan3

I may be a bit out-of-date here so those of you who are actually out in Spain correct me if I'm wrong.

Also bear in mind I'm 22 and my spanish friends range from late teens to mid-20's - these may be bands prefered by slighty older people?

A few bands/singers that spring to mind are:

ESTOPA - Two brothers from Barcelona, kind of Rumba/Rock/Pop, their songs are full of slang although I'm not sure if some of it is what you wanna be teaching teenage students!

DAVID BISBAL - Heartthrob from one of the pop talent contests 'operacion triunfo' (think American Idol/pop idol shows). He's got tons of cheesy dancy pop songs and a few ballads.

CHENOA - Not sure how popular she is anymore, but last I heard she was still David Bisbal's girlfriend and making similarly cheesy pop music.

ALEJANDRO SANZ - This guy has the voice of an angel, and the lyrics to his songs are beautiful. He's been around for years though. His greatest hits 1991 - 2004 is cracking!

OREJA DE VAN GOGH - Group from San Sebastian (I think) again they've been around a while but i think they are still popular with teens? Great Lyrics though!

Being a fan of really bad pop music I can also suggest mexican singers Paulina Rubio and Thalia.

I apologise in advance for my terrible terrible taste in music!! Wink

Assuming I am a little out-of-date who is hot music-wise in Spain now? Smiler

"El Canto Del Loco" is one of the most popular groups in Spain right now. The are sometimes referred as the new Hombres G. Any of their stuff is awesome.

"Nena Daconte" is gaining popularity. Girly voice, great lyrics & accoustic-y music. I recommend you listen to their song 'Marta'.

"Pereza" is a more rocker/hippie group (and a little bit more atrevidos in their lyrics). Listen to the song 'Madrid' to see what I mean. A popular one this past winter has been "Como lo tienes tu".

"Fito y los Fitipaldis" I hear them get played in almost every bar I go into. Very upbeat, reminded me of Los Lonely Boys, but just with one singer.

"JD Natasha" is not spanish, but her music is growing - at least in the stores. I hear 'Tatuaje' gets played 24/7.

I can't think of any other ones right now...

Hey, you need go no further than the internet. Try www.los40.com for the current faves on Spanish radio. For slang, hit the foros on a site like www.ozu.es.
