I'm thinking of taking a job at a camp called Camp Tatanka this summer as an English teacher with children. The English classes are organized by a language academy called The Canadian Center.

Just wondering if anyone's ever worked with this academy before and if so, what your opinions were of the atmosphere, conditions, pay, hours, and overall management of the classes.

Also, any other summer camps in the Madrid area that you have opinions on, please feel free to do so! The more info, the better!!

Thanks!!!

Hi, BoomShaka,

How are you? Well, indeed I worked for the Canadian Centre from Feb 06 to Dec 06 - they even found summer work for me. There was a lovely woman working there named Ally, who was the most supportive, exuberant, and reliable woman I've worked for in just about any place in Madrid. They gave me block hours, paid on time or early, defended me to students, always offered me lovely new jobs, and were genuinely sad to see me leave. (I left them because I left the country - at the time, I thought permanently, but not for any reason to do with them.)

That said, I never worked for Camp Tatonka, so I don't know the specifics of how it works. If it's still Ally in charge, she'll tell you anything you want to know - room & board, transport, dates, pay, age range, amount of teaching hours, etc.

As for teaching there during the year, Ally worked quite hard to get block hours, or hours that were convenient. The classes were nearly always not far away. The pay was low: 12 Euros an hour (in 2006), and I make more than twice that now elsewhere, but I stayed with her and my student from TCC out of sheer loyalty. And as with most decent academies, if you teach well, are reliable, and keep your students happy, they will leave you alone and let you work at your own happy pace.

If Ally isn't working there anymore, I do know that the office staff I used to work with were nice enough, professional and competent. I just didn't have much to do with them. However, I can't feel comfortable vouching for them if she isn't there, as I don't know enough about it.

I'm considering calling Ally. The Canadian Centre to ask about summer camps, too. smiler

Good luck!

Tanya
