Hola everyone!

My husband & I used to stay at the Hotel Plaza when we visited Madrid many years ago. It was a wonderful old hotel with wood parquet floors and balconies with swings overlooking the Plaza de Espana. We used to swing and get un poco borrachos con cervezas and enjoy the view.

Does the hotel exist anymore? I don't see it listed anywhere and had heard rumours that it was being changed over to apartments. If and when we get back to Madrid, I would love to spend at least one night there. Any possibility of that??

I am terribly home sick for Espana and am very jealous of all you who live there.

Thanks,
Debi

Hey Debi, welcome to our little Spain lovers group Big Grin

I love when people reminisce about this amazing country, I can close my eyes and imagine myself doing what you used to.

I think you are referring to the now called Holiday Inn Hotel Crown Plaza which changed from the Plaza to that nake when Holiday Inn bought it years ago.

Their website is at http://www.sixcontinentshotels.com/crowneplaza and I have only been in the lobby to deliver cell phones (story of my life Big Grin ) but it is a very popular hotel due to its views of the PLAZA DE ESPAA

As far as them turning it into apartments, I have not hear that rumor but it would surprise me since the hotel is such a lucrative venture.

Saludos,
jer...

That's it!!!! Thanks Jer. It still looks the same. We used to go there often about 20 years ago--airline crew. We got to know the hotel employees and they used to upgrade our rooms to suites or the ones with balconies. They had a really quaint and quiet bar in the hotel. The location was wonderful and the views from the high balconies were great!! How I miss it. If I could return tomorrow I would want to redo all of the "touristy" sites--Palacio real, el Prado, etc and also spend some time studying espanol. It has been many years and I have gotten rusty. I can remember all of the grammar but the vocab and especially the slang has been forgotten. So many things to remember. Before the airline crew days, I used to live near Quevedo and also the Plaza de la Republica Argentina. When I was there the Prosperidad metro stop was brand new and I had to walk a long way to get there. That's why I moved to Quevedo. Those were the days!!

Thanks again, Debi

Debi, I also have great memories of that hotel in the 80's. We went to several great parties there and the view was stupendous. Most of our friends were Spaniards and we went to many receptions in places like that.

I wonder if they made many changes to it (other than the prices)
;-).

I don't know why exactly but recently I have been longing for all things Spanish. I am sitting here listening to Julio Iglesias, yes Julio and wishing I had some 43 para beber and of course una buena paella, etc.

I even miss the smells..olive oil, bus fumes--the works. Must be a mid life crisis.
