There's also a castanas stand outside of Principe Pio, for those who may find themselves in that area Smiler

A little "castaa" trivia for ya.

I just saw a report on the news about the arrival of the autumn and the "castaas" (chestnuts).

People began to eat chestnuts after the Spanish civil war during the "years of hunger" as a replacement for bread when flour was scarce.

jer...

Hi,
I'm from Italy;

it's normal eating chestnuts since autumn here...

Of course you can roast them (it's the best way to cook them Wink ) but if you want you can also boil them in water, or (yes! Big Grin ) eat them raw (of course I know it's harder to peel them this way... Red Face )

About recipes:
there are lots of recipes, but mainly regarding the use of Chestnut-flour Smiler

And finally in Tuscany there's a very famous good thing, just like a cake, that used to be eaten by poor people during the old times, but now it's very appreciated (like many other dishes with the same origins... :roll: );

it's called " Castagnaccio " (Castagne = Castaas here and -accio is the suffix of despregiative: just like I said, it was eaten by poor people and so it wasn't considered a "great" thing at those times...).

It's made of Chestnut-flour, cocoa, raisin, rosemary and a few pine-seeds Smiler

Bye ! Wink

Ah, trust the Italians to take a 'hunger food' and embellish it. I can actually buy chestnut flour at an import place nearby called "G.B. Russo and Sons"(free plug; they don't, however, carry many Spanish products beyond wine and saffron)

Jer.....that post you made back in '01 of the castana stand.....know it fairly well.

Two things to be aware of at that one.... they don't make change very well, and it's wise to watch where you're leaning when they make up your order.

I now have 1/2 pair of black dress gloves...ah, I remember the aroma well..."chestnuts and dress gloves roasting on the open fire"......

Thyglow

(Does Corte Ingles have any sort of asbestos glove selection?)

Hey thyglow, yes, while THAT STAND is VERY popular, it is also in front of McDonalds on the tripple corner of Calle Postas. Esparteros and Mayor and there are always a TON of pick-pockets on that corner (all year round).

Well, it's that time of year again, and therefore time to pop this thread up as a reminder, that Christmas dinner is just 4 weeks away, and I can smell the Chestnut stuffing & Cranberry jelly already, Hmmmmmmmmmm, Yummy.

Can you detect the waft of those Castaas y Mazorcas, wafting up the Calle Postas yet Jer?

Castaas en Calle Postas

The smell of Christmas is in the air, I'm thinking about warmed mince pies & glasses of cream sherry..(Jerez)... Turrones y Mazapanes de Toledo, (my absolute favorite)

I don't know about you, but I really cannot eat roast Turkey without that home made Chestnut stuffing, I've been making it for years for my family, and they all love it too. How about you?

 .......Santiago

By the way, how easy is it to find cans of chestnut puree around here??

I think I've seen them in one or two places, but just cant remember exactly where I saw them!

Was it El Corte Ingles food hall perhaps?? I'm not sure, but I'll have another look. I love that stuff, and would like to find some. And some large jars of 'Ocean Spray' Cranberry Jelly too.

pd...see 1 post back on this thread, in fact see the whole thread, there's a jpg of the Castaa stand.

Saludos .......Santiago

I have seen pureed castaas (the sweetened kind) at El Corte Ingles (Preciados) and Champion.

I also noticed that El Corte Ingles now has Ocean Spray cranberry juice (not jelly, nor sauce, as we Americans would call it) in "briks" and as I remember, it wasn't too expensive. Is it possible to buy fresh cranberries here?

I've been all over the roasted chestnuts on the street. There's a guy in Plaza de Espaa. A lady up by Bilbao. The guy near between Sol and Plaza Mayor.

My son's school had a "castaeda" last week at school(some kind of secular chestnut party--anyone care to explain this further?). He came home wearing a crown with a drawing of a chestnut. Life is good.

Cool, thanks mariposita, I thought that I had seen it around there somewhere, that's the one I always use, the sweetened Chestnut Puree, it's the best thing to use to make the stuffing with, and the Cranberry jelly (UK) that I'm used to, is just that, a jelly, in which it is well packed with Cranberries, like with the Mint in the UK, you get mint sauce, which is runny and tangy with vinegar, and then theres the Mint jelly, set, and much, much sweeter, and to my taste, much, much more palatable, although I do like to stir the saucy one into some gravy just before serving it, especially with roast lamb... Red Face

The Ocean Spray Cranberry juice is the business too, a glass of that with an egg cupful of Vodka, stirred not shaken, goes down quite well at Xmas....just a thought... Big Grin

pd, about the foto jer, maybe someone else will go down there with their digi-cam and get acouple of shots, then put a link to them in here.

 cheers....... Santiago
