2,000 sheep and over 100 goats accompanied by horses, donkeys, (not to mention the huge amounts of human beings), etc, with central Madrid as the backdrop for the annual crossing of Madrid on their way from Len (Northern Spain) to Extremadura (South-Western Spain).
Yesterday (Sunday Nov, 4th 2001) was the yearly livestock crossing of Madrid (no jokes please ).
Unfortunately, this may be the last year for the centuries old tradition since the town hall headed up by the worst Mayor on earth has decided it that it is not to continue.
They see it as a third world spectacle and no longer want it to take place. In my opinion it is a great custom with hundreds of years of tradition. So, I am writing a letter as are many to keep it alive
Here is a teaser photo until I can get the photo/video and description pages of this event on multimadrid (within a week or so).
I had NO idea that something like this occurred, and the thought that there are people in the World who simply wish to push tradition aside because it seems to them to make Spain a 3rd World country is the same to me as some-one deciding to pull down the Aquaduct in Segovia because it's no longer in use.
Don't they realise that this is a part of the charm and enjoyment of Spain, and it's part of the reason why people travel from all over the world to visit Spain and spend their money there.
Where can I email a protest to them?
Saludos
David

Hey David, good to have your voice back on the forums :D
I am writing a letter to the stinkin Madrid Mayor and will be delivering it in person to the town hall. I think you can e-mail them at congresos@munimadrid.es and tell them what you think
I agree with you 100% and hate to see the tradition go . Maybe if enough people write, they will change their minds.
On the bright side, when I get the photo/video pages on the sheep crossing up, at least the event will live online eternally
It was great, even though it was a rainy day I had a ront row seat on the curb in Sol and also got shots of the flock in the Plaza de la Villa, Puerta del Sol, the Calle de Alcal, Plaza de Cibeles and, as seen in the photo on my post above, the Puerta de Alcal.
I was so psyched to put up some pages on the event that I designed a sheep route map, if you have the FLASH plugin you can see it at www.multimadrid.com/splash/map_sheep_route.swf If you open it, scale the browser window size until it looks clear. If you open it in a full size window it will look blurry (that will be fixed on the pages when I actually put them up next week).

You see, I said the 20th would be the day. Well I hope whoever attends will have a nice day, it's quite a spectacle, but, be very careful where you step, what with sheepdogs & sheep, and perhaps the odd donkey or two, it can get a little hazardous on the road, so stay on the sidewalk.
Saludos...

Anyone know anything about the sheep crossing. By my notes, it should be the first Sunday of November...did I miss it completely? I didn't hear a word about it? Any clues?
