Back in the early 60's Madrids garbage was picked up by men with little donkey carts. This was probably because Spain was backward, isolated and most of all poor.
There was a problem with the carts. The carts had metal tires and the early morning noise fron the wheels on the cobblestones was driving everyone nuts. The city fathers passed a law that all carts WILL have rubber tires. The change was made and Madrid was quiet again.
"...and then boys and girls, in the year 1980(ish) a new garbage truck engine was designed (and funded by city politicians who felt that the city was just too darned quiet!) that made more noise than 1,000,000,000 metal cart wheels at once and the residents of Madrid were returned to the infernal noisy trash collecting days that continue to this day
Jejejej, although I personally do not get much noise up at my apartment since it looks onto the Plaza side and is high up, I have a few friends who would just kill to go back to those metal cart days.
Hey guys, this thread reminds me of Spain all too well. Whenever we are over there, we can set our watch by the Garbage trucks arrival. It is something that is fasinating to us as we here in the UK only get our garbage bins emptied once a week and not every night as in Spain. We are usually sat on the balcony having a few last drinks before bed and Look! here he comes number 31 wagon at precisely 3am. Can't say I would have liked the cart wheels turning at that time though. Sue who loves to watch the world go by.
I love spain
