Hey jaunito, welcome to the board!!! You placed this question fine, not to worry. For the 3rd person singular preterite "RI�" is the correct form. On those other Spanish conjugation tables are wrong. quote: "Why does IO in VIO and DIO funtion as "un diptongo" and IO in RI� as "un hiato" if both IO's are composed of a weak (I) and strong (O) vowal?"
I guess you could think of it as one of those verbs you have to memorize. Also, "REIR" is a 2 syllable word with 2 vowels back to back while "DAR" and "VER" are monosylabic words with 1 vowel between 2 consonants. As far as I know that causes the difference here. Hope that helps. Saludos, jer...

Yes, memorising is not a problem. I've been dealing with this word for such a long time that I'd have a hard time forgetting if if I wanted to.  As far as I know (=remember) the origin of a word doesn't have much to do with accent marks. I've been thaught that when deciding whether to put a "tilde" on a word or not one ahould look at the word phonetically... which works in all the other cases. Well, the fact that this might be an exception doesn't bother me (I mean, it wouldn't be the only one in Spanish  ) what confuses me is the fact that no dictionary nor grammar book points it our as such (as an exception). I supose the best thing to do is simply to forget it (the problem) and memorise (the word). So long, j. |

Has puesto el dedo en la llaga! Ri� es una excepci�n que a m� tambi�n me fascina, pero quisiera aclararte un punto: vio y dio s� son diptongos, pero ri� no es un hiato exactamente. Para que haya hiato, la tilde tiene que estar, si no recuerdo mal, en la vocal d�bil, que es la �nica manera de romper el diptongo, es decir de crear dos s�labas, cada una con una vocal. En ri�, la tilde est� en la vocal fuerte, con lo que se mantiene el diptongo. (R�o, en cambio, s� es un hiato.)
Pero ya s� que esto no contesta a tu pregunta... Todav�a no he dado yo tampoco con una respuesta concluyente, pero algo he o�do de que esta tilde perdura desde los tiempos en que la RAE s� acentuaba las palabras monos�labas. Luego se dej� de hacer, para simplificar, pero parece ser que en esta forma verbal se conserv� para distinguirla de la forma del presente de indicativo (r�o). Con formas como vio y dio no se presentaba el problema porque en presente se conjugan como veo y doy, lo cual no se presta a confusi�n.
