some changes and one very cool new feature i am adding to the board.

not on every forum yet (until tested and 100% functional) but there is a new right hand column on the main forum page (http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/forums).

the column content will vary from forum to forum and it contains the google ads i removed a few months ago.

the coolest part of the new column is the "shout box".

a shout box is basically a feature that is between a message board and a chatroom. a message board being where topics are discussed and are on the board forever so people can add to them and read them as they wish. a chatroom being a live discussion that is usually fast and only lasts while the chat goes on, once the chat is over, the content goes bye bye.

a shout box falls in between the 2. it is a dynamic content box that people can add to and read the last 20 "shouts" on. as you add, the new shout appears at the bottom of the list (just above the shout input window).

shouts are mean to be one or 2 line tidbits that people want to shout out here on the site.

you can write anything you like pretty mmuch (keep it clean ). for example...

- have a nice day!
- hotdogs and hamburgers.
- life is sweet.
- what's your frequency kenneth.
- etc...

so you see, what you write needs not make sense at all.

the guy who designed it defined it as...

i have set it up so that not only members can add shouts, anyone can. so, a guest (aka "lurker" ) who is on the site can also add shouts.

if you are a member (logged in of course) and you add a shout, your name shows next to the shout as well as the time you added it. if you are a guest and you add a shout, only the time and the shout appear.

i am allowing all visitors to add shouts for the time being but if non-members abuse it and misuse it, i will make it a members only toy

there are still some quirks i need to work out but it works in the right hand column right now. just limit yourselves to writing your shouts in the input box and clicking the "Shout" button and all will be fine. i need to work out some kinks before the "refresh" and "graemlins" functions work on all browsers. to refresh the shoutbox, just refresh your browser page. each time you move from one page to the next in the forums, the shoutbox refreshes as well.

use the scrollbar to the right of the shouts to read older shouts at the top.

soon it will be on all pages on the board and will be a new fun part of multimadrid.

it took me a looooong time to get this going so please tell me ya love it


IMPORTANT: SHOUTBOX WORKS IN ALL BROWSERS BUT IS BEST COMPATIBLE WITH THE FIREFOX BROWSER (see http://www.firefox.com).

oh, by the way...

- shouts need not be spain related, they can be about anything.
- shouts cannot advetise products and/services (same as on the forums and calendar).
- shouts should not be more than a sentence or 2 (short sentences).
- the shoutbox is NOT to be used to ask/give advice, that is what the FORUMS are for.
- shouts cannot insult peeps nor contain nasty language.

as admin, i can revoke shout privies if you all do not stick to the rules (at least a little bit ).

use it but don't abuse it!

Why wasn´t I logged in? Well, since the time Juliette posted as me when I forgot to log out in the Toledo CC I have taken your advice and log out. I pulled this up, saw the shout box, and my first reaction as you saw was Oh help, (well they were not the words in my head!!!!). Logged in then!!!

OK sensible question (I hope). As it stands at the moment the shoutbox is to the right, in a small box, on the main forum page. If I refresh it, it automatically turns into a full page, and doesn´t stay in its little box. How can I make it stay over to the right and little?

ok madsue (and all), i got the shoutbox refreshing in it's own frame when you click the button.

also got rid of the button and function alltogther as we have a chat already (http://spaintalk.multimadrid.org/eve/chime) and i do not want the shoutbox to be mistaken for a chatroom.

and i designed some cool new grafix for the right column...

yes, in fact, member "Juliette67" has a mac and she shouted last night (more like this morning) a few times.

i have not tested it on mac myself so maybe she or Roland can give some feedback.

i think the safari browser destroys a few things on many sites (my calendar for example) so not sure what it does to the shoutbox.

ihmo, since 5% (or less) of the world uses mac and 5% of them use safari, i can't really worry about it looking good there.

by the way, the shouts can have up to 50 characters (including spaces), i have limited it so nobody writes a book there.

hhmmm, tried it on my mac today and didn't pop up anything???

have a g4 running under panther lastest version and the browser I used was safari, I'll try using firefox later.
