thanks for all your e-mails and concern about the problems that the board has been giving these past few days.
i am aware or the probs and was before anyone (as is expected) so please do not post about the probs on random threads as some of you have done. i know you mean well but trust me when i tell you that you are not telling me anything i do not already know.
if anyone is interested, it seems to be a php problem as those are the links that are not working. the cgi links are fine which is why you are able to use the top 10-s still with no probs.
i have written to my hosting server a few times and gotten no response as of yet. a bit annoying since it has been over a week since i first wrote them about this problem
and no, i will not change hosts. not unless anyone can recommend a RELIABLE host that gives me unlimited bandwith and 500 mb webspace or more for under 200 euros a year.

I have a web site...see the link to my website on my signature line of each of my posts...
I have a section on it where people that visit can contact me...it uses php to transfer the form fields into the php file and return a page that says "Thank You (person) for your response". It then generates and email to me with that person's name and other info they input.
BTW, my php scripts on my site aren't working either...I use a company called "instaspace".
The reason I'm telling you all of this? My friend is a web developer and he informed me that because of the increasing security risks of php scripts that most hosting companies have begun disabling php scripts "by default" on their hosting servers. He's say this started about a month ago, which conincides to when my php scripts stopped working. The solution he says...is to either use your administration page (the one you go to to set up accounts, manage your site) and enable php script, or contact the web host provider and request that they enable the passing of php scripts (which is probably what you have done).
Finally, he told me that many hosting companies are not enabling php on their sites "on request" because it poses a security risk to their entire hosting servers infrastructure. Meaning these security risks could in effect be transmitted to other paying customers web sites which would cause them to lose lots of business.
Anyway, he says that what someone needs to do in this situation is to develop "session" scripts that timeout when a person leaves the site or times out after a set amount of time. Don't know much about doing this but if you'd like I can certainly ask him.
And, maybe this isn't the reason for the problem you're having at all?!?! Let me know when they respond if it is and I'll see if I can help.
one question however: if in fact my host server had disabled php, would that not be all the time?
i ask because today we had about 8 good hours of php working fine and the board the way it used to be, perfect.
if they have disabled php, it does not make sense that it would work part of the time
mabe your friend can shed some light on that as i have not heard back from my server and am totally in the dark
also, i looked at my host's website and in their "current issues" section they mention nothing about dropping php. i then looked at the support pages and indeed they are running php 4.3.9
don't have a php on/off toggle on my board's control panel either
Tony, after posting that last message above, i went back to my control panel and i reviewed a special setting that my board software has called "ubb accelerator". it states...
quote:
Enable UBB.classic Accelerator: If you have a recent version of PHP installed on your web server, you may enable the optional UBB.classic Accelerator module. Please execute the test script and read the 'accelerator.txt' file located in the distribution zip's 'help' directory for more information. DO NOT ENABLE THIS FEATURE UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE RESULTS OF THE TEST SCRIPT AND THE HELP TEXT FILE!
well, when i last upgraded the board version (about 8 months ago) i ran the test script and it worked fine so i activted the "accelerator" as it is supposed to make the board go faster.
i just tried to execute the test script again and guess what... it did not work
so, i deactivated the "accelerator" and now all seems to be ok
so now, looking at the status bar as i pass mouse over the links that used to call php scripts, they suddenly call cgi scripts instead. i recall that they used to call cgi scripts before i upgraded to the later version of the board software, ran that accelerator test script and turned it on. so, what the accelerator seems to do is change the board from using cgi scripts to php, make sense?
not sure why this has happened but i will have to get to the bottom of it all. still confused as to why the php worked today during the day and does not work now. only my host knows and they don't answer me.
basically, it all adds up to the conclusion that php is NOT working on my server but for now the board is ok again
That was all WAY over my head... but does this somehow explain why I haven't been able to open any posts the majority of the times I've come here over the last month?
