right, but even if the tax is 15% + 16% + 2.5% of USD118, that still doesn't work out to EU 58.50! Shady...

Ok guys...the moment we've all been waiting for:
Spoke at length with UPS Spain about the unpleasantness described and the deferment I thought was necessary for the payment while the police investigated the man who had been at my door- my question: "How did he get private info etc etc etc...lets get the police to see whats happening and then I will pay you when it is resolved." That was three weeks ago and I just got a total invoice for Euro 4.85 in the mail-total! HOW SHADY IS THAT! Secret feeling of triumph but also dire warning about taxes, duty, and the rest of it.
Oh, and UPS told me that part of the cost was because I was responsible for storage fees over a holiday weekend for a 0.25 LB package for three days. Cost= Euro 33.00.
I guess asserting your gut feeling is worth it here. I am glad I saw this out even though it wasn't fun and a little scary at times. I saved beaucoup dollars and feel a little validated.
And UPS was pretty cool about it.
So, thanks everyone for all your input and support! Viva Multimadrid!!!
Gracias,
Sonsy
