hey everyone -- I'm interested in trying out a day hike with a club based in madrid and did a google search, came up with the following:
-Atuaire (clubatuaire.com) -Paso a Paso (clubpasoapaso.com) -Club Geografica (geografica.es)
was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience with any of the clubs, or knew of others, and could recommend one over the other? they all look pretty well-organized, just thought someone might offer their thoughts...
Thanks!

I've had quite a bit of experience with Arawak www.arawakviajes.com and they've been excellent for all the activities I've joined basically hiking and skiing for several years. They are punctual, well organized and professional. I'm sure if you do a SEARCH here on mm you will find more threads about hiking and outdoor activities. Lena
hey boom_shaka, as Lena said, do a search here on the board, hiking has been discussed quite a bit.
apparently, Madrid Insider (A.K.A. Rocco) is the hiking expert here but i looked on his website ( www.madridinsider.com ) and while i saw a section on walking tours in the city, i could not find a hiking section.
in theory, it should be under the "Sports & Recreation" section on his website
So far all of the hiking trips that I went on I have organized myself or have hooked up with people who were already going. No official 'Senderismo' organizations.
I have been to a couple 'Tiendas Verdes' (Map and hiking stores) to look at books and have found some information, but have not had enough experience with them to post anything worthwhile. I will work on it and get back to you on what I have. One of the best stores I went to was near Metro: Cuatro Caminos on the Calle Maudes.

After three years in Miami, I'm totally psyched to be moving to Madrid, a city that actually has some topography, not to mention mountains nearby!! I LOVE hiking. I know there are plenty of organzed tour-type trips I could go on. Ideally, I'd find a group of friends that likes to take their own excursions every once and a while to go hiking.
Anyway, Madrid Insider- your link for hiking places doesn't work anymore
And boom_shaka, did you ever get out on a hiking trip?

My website had a blow out and I had to restart all of the information and links from scratch. If anyone copied any of the information when it was up please send it back to me so that I can post it again on my site. If not I will have to do the reseach again and post it under another link later.

Hi, I've only ever tried one hiking club here in Madrid - mainly because they've been so great that I've seen no reason to change :-)
It's called Tierra de Fuego and it's quite well known. They used to have their office and book store (they're not just a hiking club but also publish books about senderismo, as well as arrange longer trips outside Madrid) on c/Pez but have moved to Travesia de Conde Duque, 3.
Their guides are really nice and knowledgable, and the walks have been fantastic.
Speaking of hinking, any recomended areas. Chris and I love hiking (nothing to strenuious though) and are looking forward to exploring the area around Madrid once our car arrives.
