I'll be going to Madrid at the end of the month. Can you recomend some good inexpensive restaurants around Sol? I'm interested in typical Spanish food.

Hola Juan y JaimeMiguel,

One great inexpensive (yes, it's true!) around the Puerto del Sol is right around the corner from La Mallorquina. It is a deli called "Ferpal" (officially it's called "Jamoneria Ferpal"). The address is: Calle: Arenal 7, Austrias. You can buy great products there and strangely enough, only locals are in the store but no tourists. They have a tapas restaurant around the corner but you can also eat at the counter on the right side of the deli.

When you first walk in one of the entrances, you can get jamon serrano and other deli meats on the left side, in any amount. We wanted to make a sandwich with jamon serrano and asked for 1 Euro's worth. It was more than enough for two sandwiches. We bought a baguette and the cheese and the other counter. All for a mere 2 Euros and change. They have a cute sandwich counter in front of you where half sandwiches with all sorts of fillings is only ,54 centimos.

At the other deli, we bought a large bottle of extra virgin olive oil for 2 Euros and change, Paprika for 1 Euro and change, and saffron (much cheaper than El Corte Ingles) for 1 Euro and change for 1 gram!

Then there is the counter on the right where people have their cafe con leche and sandwiches.

Please check it out. It is very high quality and very inexpensive, especially for the Puerta del Sol area! You will be amazed at the cheap prices at this place. We ate here 5-6 times while we were in Madrid a few days ago and when we first arrived two weeks ago.

Saludos!

La finca de Susana, just of plaza de Sevilla is one of Madrid's best bargins for a really nice sit down restaurant....I highly recommedn the patatas con huevos y jamon for a apetizer, and the desserts are a must try: a am particularly fond of the one that is bolas de helado vanilla con una salsa de frambuesa...mmm.mmm.good. Also, owned by the same people and just as tasty, is La Gloria de Montera, located on a little side street off the right side of c/montera as you head from sol towards gran via....try the Chocolatisimo for desert!

Hey Michelita, you read my mind! After seeing the name of that restaurant on another post of yours I was going to ask ya where it was and ya beat me to it Big Grin

After not having any idea where the "Plaza de Sevilla" is in Madrid (did not ring a bell Confused ), i guessed that you may have mistaken the "Plaza de Canalejas" which is at the end of the Calle Sevilla on the Carrera de San Jernimo and just off Puerta del Sol and calling it the "Plaza de Sevilla". Some people just think it is called that since it is near the Metro Sevilla and at the end of Calle Sevilla, completely understandable.

I looked up the "Finca de Susana" and my suspicion was right, it is on "Calle de Arlabn, 4", follow this link for a map --> http://callejero.lanetro.com/apps/lanetro/mapas/mapas.asp?id_via=2068&pais_geoc=ESPA%D1A&nombredevia=Calle+de+Arlabn&numerovia=4&nombre_fichero=ta1esp-madrd-madrid&lite_provincia_ geoc=Madrid&lite_municipio_geoc=Madrid

Thanks again for the recommendation, I will be dropping in there soon

Gracias y saludos,
jer...

You are right...thats the Plaza I meant...anyways, if you plan on stopping by, I forgot to mention that since I first discovered the place 3 years ago it has grown to have quite a following...so If you are going on a friday or saturday night especially, be there by about 820p ( how sinfully early for a madrileno, i knowSmiler)and get in line. Yes, there is a line that forms just before the place opens at 830p, because it is small so if you dont get in then, youre not likely to get seeted till 11p, if at all. It is not quite so busy during the week, and you can often walk up at more civilized hour, say 930 or so, on a tuesday night or what ever. La Gloria de Montera, the other resaurant owned by the same folks, also tends to have the same over crowding problems on the weekends, although not quite so much, but same rules apply in regards to arriving early. ALso, if you become a fan, which I have no doubt you will, I believe they also do a very good lunch business, although I ve only had dinner there. So youll have to let me know.... Buen Provecho!

I can recommend Maceiras (Huertas 66),unexpensive and useful to show solidarity with Galicia

I too can recommend a very inexpensive little place, on the Carretera San Jeronimo,9, a skip and a hop from Sol, called the Cerveceria Albacar,
My son and I had a nice dinner for 10.97 Euros. I had Jamon Serrano, and a Tortilla de Patata, and my son had a steak and eggs. Smiler

Another very nice place is the ] Cafeteria Restaurante Europa, here's a pict. in Calle del Carmen, 4, a true skip from Sol! We had bread, Calamares Romana, Salmoin, Fabada Asturiana, and 2 glasses of Sangria for 33,04 euros, or $15.00 per person. The meal was delicious!

I would not recommend the VIPS chain of restaurants, because in a city like Madrid where culinary delights abound for under $20, why eat at an eatery that you find in your hometown, VIPS is like Morrison's Cafeterias here in the U.S.

Buen Gusto!

I fully agree on La finca de susana (opened recently anoher restaurant "La gloria de Montera" in calle Jardines, I think, by Montera)and specially on Maceira (but prefer the original Maceira 100 metres down the street).

Best croquetas de bacalao and bacalao portions in Casa Labra (at the small pedestrian street right off calle Preciados by el Corte Ingls entrance).
A non touristic place, good daily menu -lots of food and home made- for 7.50, nice decoration and perfect service: Beer Station, in Cuesta de Santo Domingo, right by the parking side. Also good beers and night atmosphere, concerts, story tellers...
