I wanna suggest a place you can see Flemenco dance any time of the year. It is a resturant with a big room in the back. Casa Patas. I always bring my friends to get just a preview taste of flamenco. It is ALWAYS a hit to the novice or virgin flamenco watcher. Go to the late show so you can hang out afterwards. Their info...

Direccin Caizares, 10. Zona Centro. Metro Antn Martn. Tfn 91 369 04 96. Jer will have to verify.

Hey LAguy, jer here. No need to verify that infoi on Casa Patas, you hit the nail on the head. A great place indeed and always special shows going on as well as the usual Flamenco and Spanish dance.

Another suggestion is the "Tablao Flamenco Arco de Cuchilleros". on Calle Cuchilleros on your left and just south of the well renowned "Arco de Cuchilleros". I used to take my groups there when I was a tour guide here. There is no entrance fee, just a 700 peseta. (approx. $4) per person minimum on spending inside. Always nice to go with a friend and get a "jarra" ("jar") of Sangra between the two of you and spend an evening watching Flamenco and/or Sevillanas.

Saludos,
jer...

Although I've said it before I've no hesitation in recommending Las Carboneras on Plaza Conde de Miranda again. Worth it for Falo's singing alone - and La Tacha is an amazing dancer (and teacher) Have been to Casa Patas but obviously went on the wrong night becsue I was very disappointed. Karenanne

Are the recommendations on this thread still current? We will be in Madrid at the end of May/2006 and would like to catch a flamenco show. The recommendations on Rick Steves' book seem to be expensive to me. Maybe I'm just being a cheapo but is 25 euros for a flamenco show what I should expect to pay?

yep!!!

UNLESS you take my recommendation for the "Tablao Flamenco Arco de Cuchilleros" on Calle Cuchilleros (see my post above). no cover fee, just have to spend 7 euros (hasd gone up since my last post) minimum per person on food/drinks brews

took my mom and her friends there the week of my wedding and then went back the next night with my dad and his girlfriend. they all had a blast. the night mom went was just dance (sevillanas) but the night my dad went, they got sevillanas and flamenco.

Hey Jer,
I'd like to take my brother to "Tablao Flamenco Arco de Cuchilleros" on Calle Cuchilleros
Do I need to make a reservation ahead?
Thanks
Nava

nava...you need to make reservations for all flamenco shows. and i guess it goes w/o saying....skip the expensive meal and eat elsewhere.

also there is a new kid in town Las Tablas started by two dancers who were sick of the tired tourist trade and wanted to push the flamenco creative bubble a bit.
i haven't been, but have heard good things....

hey Nava, ¡OJO!

as a general rul, what Candy says is on the money but YOU NEED NO RESERVATION at the Tablao Flamenco Arco de Cuchilleros. in fact, last i went (took my mom and her friends and my dad and his girlfriend on 2 diff. nights the days after my wedding), they were not accepting ressies. i did go in early in the afternoon and slipped the bartender dude a 5er (yes, so very american of me big grin) to "hold" a great table right in front of the stage. that 5 euro bill held the same table for us the following night as well. pretty funny as my dad was shocked, being from new york all he could say was that the greasin would have cost him at LEAST a 20 (if not a 50) back home die laughing

show starts at 10:30pm (if i recall corectly), or was it 10:00pm. probably best to pop by and ask ahead to be sure of showtime.

you should get there about 45 mins. before the show to get a good table though (in lieu of greasin the palm of course wink).

all trat said, i believe the min. spend limit per person is now 7 euros (up from the 700 pelas it was when i posted above). again, no entry fee, just have to spend 7 euros per person on drinky and/or food. as Candy said, eat before you go and just have drinks there. not sure the food is expensive and overrated at this place as it is at many but the food menu is very limited.

saludos,
jer...

We run by there every time we run (which has been for a while becuase of knee problems)any idea how popular it is, we have family coming and high on his to do list is Flamco dancing. Unfortuanatly my Spanish is much beyond hello coffee etc. So I thought of just dropping by when they open.

I may check out "Tablao Flamenco Arco de Cuchilleros" as I walk by there almost everyday (currently living in tempory housing till everything arrives).

If you do go to Las Tablas, can you report back on it (price, food, drink prices, etc.)?

Went there last year. It was an acoustic set - good singing. Didn't go this summer but pretty sure it was E22. Karenanne. You could also try the Contra Club which has flamenco on a Tuesday - no entrance fee.
