Amazing that I can't find this info searching on google!
Basically, two questions:

1) if i have my glasses and RX from the states and need to get new glasses here, what is the procedure? are glasses more expensive here?

2) if i've never worn glasses but want to get tested and get glasses here, what is the procedure? is it covered by social seguridad or do i have to go private?

so confusing!!!!!!!

hey candy, i am guessing this is for your book.

go to a few opticals and get prices. they often have specials (2 for 1, etc...). it is my experience that glasses are more expensive here. try www.alainafflelou.es as i have seen good deals in tv ads.

most optical shops will give you a free eye exam so take advantago of it. you can also go to the optometrist and Ophthalmologist via both ss and private insurance as eyes are covered by both here in spain.

yes, it is for my book--but it enriches mm at the same time!! two parajos, one bola!

my hubby who has been nicknamed gafas since he was a kid, says it is best to go straight to the optico for the test. he says if you go to the ss doctor, they will still end up sending you to an optico to get the glasses made anyway, so it saves a step.

Twit nutz Why didn't you ask hubby in the first place big grin Or didn't you believe him?

Nothing constructive to add, just to confirm, that just go to the opticians, give your social security number, and nothing to pay!

Candy,

Personally I think its a good idea to see a ss ophthalmologist once in a blue moon, with an idea to check your eyes for any problems. Last month I found out I had hipermetropia. I am not sure if the optico would bother finding that out as they just want to examine you and sell glasses. Also I was told that I do NOT need glasses yet, so maybe ss ophthalmologist is a little more objective and not sale driven.

Candy. Most optical shops in Spain that do the testing have both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist working there and doing the testing for free. Just that the specialist will not be there every day. That person will only come in once or twice a week or only on specific days. The people who are there everyday should be able to schedule an appointment with their specialist for you.
Rocco.
