I have been quoted so many different prices on various websites for a 4 day stay, from 202 inc all taxes and breakfast, to 357 not inc taxes, for the same dates! This is for a single room with bath, which seems to make it on a par with some hostal room rates.
(I have tried to search it, but found nowt, so apologies if it is here somewhere )

I think it's far too much, hotel or not, it just sounds like it's over priced for only 4 days.
I have had 7 days/nights before, in a fairly reasonable hostal, with shower/hand basin/air-con/central heating/TV phone, etc, for about 196 cash, in Tribunal-c/Fuencarral area, and another 3 star hostal "Santillan" Av/Gran via,7 days/nights for 210 cash, with full en-suite etc, and a very well looked after place it is too, nice decor etc, and pretty quiet generally.
why not have a good look around at the different prices first, and not just at so called Hotels, because some hostales are not at all bad.
Have a look at the available rooms on this site, this is the one I have used often, and have always found a very good price. HOSTELWORLD

I've stayed at Hotel Asutrias. It is not bad, but certainly nothing special at all. Your general run of the mill tourist class hotel. Have you checked out Hotel Europa? When my parents came last year I thought of putting them in Asturias, but Europa is the same thing, and the prices were cheaper. www.hoteleuropa.es. I would say if you were goign to pay a little bit more because you thought it was a nice place or whatever, dont bother, its not that nice. Overall rating for Asturias: 3 stars, very generic. Hope this helps! Michelita

Gracias Angel, and thanks to all for the quick replies! Great website Iberian.
I have already done many price comparisons, for example, the Europa is 59 per night, plus extra for breakfast and taxes, the Macarena is 53, and this seems to be the norm for a single room with ensuite (and I really need that loo!!!! :b: ).
Any other suggestions gratefully received!
I found the Asturias on the following site, which may be of use to others www.octopus4easyjet.com

Hey madsue, I have been to the Asturias a few times to deliver phones to clients and it is a decent hotel and very well situated as Angel has stated above.
I would prefer La Macarena for the 53 Euros, it is more quaint and just as well located.
ONE GENERAL BIG WARNING ABOUT THE HOTEL ASTURIAS!!!
I HAD A CLIENT THERE THIS PAST JULY (LATE IN THE MONTH) AND THEY HAD NO AIR CONDITIONING!!!
MY CLIENT WAS NOT A HAPPY CAMPER AS IT WAS 40 DEGREES OUTSIDE (AND INSIDE FOR THAT MATTER )
With their rates they should DEFINITELY provide AC.
Jer, that is exactly what I was going to mention about the Asturias...I remember that mm gathering that steamy night in August when she was talking about the NO AIR CONDITIONING>>> . Also, I think there are many other lovely places to stay in Madrid. Try the Bancotel coupons to get a good deal. We stayed in the Palace for 150 Euros a nite and also the Casn del Tormes for 50 Euros a nite. both places were good and wonderful values for the service and situation.

I second the motion on Hotel Europa, and they just redid the inside and it's BRAND NEW< it's incredible, my mom was just there about a month ago. All in all I have stayed there 5 times and always had a great experience, especially now that it's totally new! Good luck, Joy

Thanks all and sundry for the reports. Iberias site is good, so I will continue to look for accommodation on there, and post on the accomm in Madrid thread with any questions! The Asturias looked good, as it seemed the cheapest out of the ones I was looking at. However, I really cant afford to pay 50 a night, especially at the start of my trip!! But I am too old and crotchety to go in a dorm style room, and I have to have a loo!!!!!

Hi Madsue, I'm an equally old and crochety person! I did stay at the Asturias once and agree it's nothing special. Now I always stay in the Hostal Riesco (Calle Correo, off Sol) Why? Because the rooms have a shower/loo and a double is only about 45E a night. (I think a single is thirty something) I'm sure there are better places but as I'm never in much all I want is somewhere clean, cheap and central! Karenanne

Thanks Karen, I had got the Riesco from Iberians site, and thought that might be okay. Also I have found Hostal Conchita - cheap at 24! Like you I dont intend to do much else but sleep (and get clean!) wherever I stay, I will be out exploring, and eating, and drinking!!!!!!

I have also stayed at the Conchita (both the I and the II (Conchita's daughter runs the II, Conchita the I)). They are super cheap and relatively clean. Al the rooms have TV (they used to have little fridges too, but they took those out). I have pictures of the inside around here somewhere that I can send you if you want. Michelle
