Hola jetaway Jill.
Don't worry, it is not uncommon to have trouble finding a semi-permanent and reasonably priced pad in Madrid these days, in fact, it is the norm
Check the classifieds at both
www.multimadrid.com/classifieds and
www.in-madrid.com/classifieds for available apartments and/or rooms.
It is Thusday Jan. 24th and while the Jan. ads are probably already obsolete (rooms and apartments do not last long here), I will have the Feb. ads up by tomorrow and I can tell you that there are quite a few good leads in there for next month (wink, wink).
With things the way they are regarding finding rooms and such here in Madrid, it is not a bad idea to pay to get a good place to stay. Some agencies such as Room Madrid charge like 100 Euros (16.000 pesetas) which in my opinion is way to much but there is a new organization here in the city center run by a bilingual guy named Donald that helps newcomers to Madrid to find digs. He only charges 30 Euros (5.000 pesetas) and Don always has rooms and apartments available

(a true feat here!).
