Friends going to Madrid in March asked that I recommend a couple of hostels around Mayor, Sol, Opera -

I just did a search and everything I could find was really old - does anyone have current knowledge of what is available now? Am hoping that someone has had visiting family/friends over the holidays and might be able to give more current suggestions and recommendations than I can -

Its a couple in their 40's - she knows Madrid well .... he will learn to roll eyes

Thanks everyone -

this is tough to answer without any price guidelines. or preferences for style--ultra modern, traditional? if price is no object and they want style, I like the Urban on San Gernomimo. a great traditional hotel under 100 (barely)is Hotel Prado on C. Prado, but be sure to get a room on the top floor for a free terrace.
If you give more details, you'll get more responses.

Hi Puna! Hope you had a nice holiday!

I always recommend Hostal Tijcal. Before actually moving to and becoming a resident of Spain, I regularly stayed at this hostal on my numerous visits to the country. I can't speak for their location on Calle Cruz. I stayed in their hostal on Calle Zaragoza.

The owners are very nice and the rooms are neat and clean with TVs, telephones, etc.

I have also taken the dining club that I organize to their restaurant. Lots of food for reasonable money.

Hope that helps!

i had my mom and her 3 friends stay at the tijcal for our wedding and it was great. more like a hotel than a hostel but at a hostel price. clean, nice and very central on calle zaragoza (the one they stayed at) just off the plaza mayor. i got my mom a nice corner room as she was the mother of the groom big grin

also, hostal la macarena (calle cuchileros) is always an excelent choice. just do a search for it on the board (even if the thread is old it is still valid). i had my dad and his girlfriend at the macarena for the wedding stay.

saludos,
jer...
