Hey, how are you?
One of my friends works off c/ Alcala in Barrio de la Concepcion, and lives between metros Goya and Ibiza on c/ Narvaez which is literally one block from Retiro. He walks to and from work nearly every day it isn't raining, and there's a direct bus going that way too.
I personally have lived near Plaza Mayor for one year, and now the Salamanca area for six months. One of the nice parts of Salamanca is that it's close to Retiro and walkable to city center. You will not have to use the metro unless you want to; if you like to walk, this is a great area - there's the park, there are far fewer tourists, the area is very safe at night, and it's beautiful. And of course, there's the world-class shopping out here, if you're into that like I am...
It depends on what you are looking for, and what's available when you turn up. City center can be full of students, foreigners, and tourists; however, the atmosphere and nightlife are just incredible. The suburbs offer quiet, safety, and far more Spanish families and residential neighborhoods, much like any city in the world. But the further out you go, the more you'll have to work out transportation, especially at night if you go out.
I really like living in the Salamanca area and would recommend it to anyone considering it. It's just beautiful and it's pretty much located near everything I need - my job, the park, city center, and shopping.
