A hostel in a safe neighborhood - Topic Powered by eve community

I am coming to Madrid in December and I need to know what neighborhood is safe enough for taking a hostel. I would like a hostel in the Plaza mayor area. I heard many horror stories about bad neighborhoods where "ladies of the evening' did there business and where odd characters roamed about. I am traveling alone and want a reasoably safe area to stay. I have reservations with a hotel for two days but want something cheaper for the remaining eight days. Also any multimadrid parties going on for New Years Eve?
