I was wondering...if I am going to Madrid in July of 2005, how soon should I set up reservations in a hostel and does anyone have recommendations for centrally located hostels which are safe and clean? THANKS!

Hiya, if you do a search you will find loads of recommendations for hostals in Madrid.

I always stay in La Plata (do a search on that too!), because I want an ensuite bathroom and a private room. La Plata is on Gran Via, spotless, and cheap, and has a 24 hr doorman. They had recommended reserving at least two weeks in advance, but I tried that in the high season, and they were full. However, it wont be high season when you are there so two weeks should be ample.

There are lots of hostals with dorm style rooms which are much cheaper, and if you look on jers homepage he has some good recommendations too.

jenzo..do you mean like a youth hostel type place with several to a room...or a hostel as in a step down or two quality-wise from a hotel.

if you mean the former, there is a new one in town called Cats. www.catshostel.com it's big plus is super central location, a pretty happening international bar, and an amazing inner courtyard..very moorish with low floored seating, a center fountain and intricate tile work.

Hey that looks good candela!!! Maybe this could be another place for djzelda to spin, and then all us wanderers could just fall into bed afterwards!! Big Grin Though it made me laugh to see the private rooms for couples have bunk beds in them. Bagsie me the bottom one!!!!! Cos someone told me you should never be on top after the age of 40 :b:
