This will sound oh, so "Ugly American" of me, but will I be able to have eggs for breakfast in Madrid and Barcelona? Don't stone me...I'm just one of those people who love eggs!! Second question: When buffet breakfasts are included in hotel charges, what are they usually like? Cereals, breads, etc., or EGGS???!!!
Thanks, Linda, the not-so-ugly American

I've had numerous breakfast buffets in Spain that were included with the hotel cost because we were booked as a tour group. Every one was distinctive and wonderful!!! In Barcelona I adored the peaches that were offered. In another hotel, I loved the breads and the tortilla espanola. There were meats of all kinds. Like I said, there is so much to choose from.

Aahhhhh, tortilla espanola! Not only is that made with eggs, but you can eat it any time of the day. I keep trying to make it, but I don't quite have it down yet. I think I'm putting too much potato in it.
Also, does anyone know the recipe for pure de calabacin? We had that all the time when I was in Leon, but I don't know the recipe and can't find it anywhere.

Hi gang, great resposes but I am sure that linda wants the egg in it's pure form, either scrambled, sunny side up, poached, etc... but not in a tortilla for her breakfast.
linda, eggs for breakfast before 12:00 noon are not par for the course here as I am sure you know. I had 2 fried eggs with "patatas fritas" (french fries) for lunch today at 3:00pm which is totally normal here but you are going to have a hard time finding a place to serve them up at breakfast
They do however aimed to please here and are usually very accommodating so you may ask a cafetera if they would not mind frying you up a few huevos special order, The worst they could do is say no. Never heard of anyone getting deported for ordering "huevos" for breakfast unless they are the "huevos" of the President or the King ("huevos" is also slang here for "balls", and not the kind you play sports with).
If your hotel is 4 or 5 stars I think they can whip you up some fried eggs (huevos fritos) for breakfast but expect to pay extra for it. As Sofia mentioned above, the breakfasts included in the hotel price vary from place to place but typically you will get a light breakfast that will include any of the following; toast, croissant, fresh fruit, yogurt, tortilla espaola and even jamn serrano at nicer hotels. Caf con leche and O.J. are sure things of course.
By no means is the list limited to the above however.
Saludos & please come back to this thread and let us know how your breakfast egg hunt went
Back to the subject of eggs for breakfast. I just realized that some of the Irish and British pubs here (there are loads of them) offer the good old British breakfast of eggs & baked beans.
Thanks, everyone, for your replies. It looks like I'll be changing my ways while in Sunny Spain! I will have to be more adventurous, open myself up to bread for breakfast! I can feel the pounds piling on my hips as I speak...

Jer has the right attitude CUANDO A ROMA FUESES, HAZ LO QUE VIESES. I lost a lot of weight while I lived in Spain because I walked everywhere. I enjoyed looking at the buildings and the people while walking down the street. Open your mind and do something differently. I know that I did in Madrid.
Enjoy your time there and I hope to see you there.

Try the Cafeteria Sol-Arenal on calle Arenal #3 (very close to Puerta del Sol). They have fried eggs with bacon on their menu, plus tons of other tasty goodies.

Yeah, I forgot about that place that Juan has recently brought to our attention.
Also, there is a chain called "Caas y Tapas" ( www.tapaspain.com ) and while very touristy, they have a menu catering to the "egg lover". Check theri website for locations but I was walking past the one on Calle Atocha (#42, down by Antn Martn Metro) the other day and saw a yuimmy looking plate of fried eggs and "chistorra" (like small sausage but loads tastier).
It is more of a lunch place (not open for breakfast as far as I know) but thought it might be worht mentioning.
The MUSEO DEL JAMN serves up eggs (accompanied by just abou8t anything you want) starting at 9am
