There was an interesting article in In-Madrid this month on old man bars. The author gave 5 essentials for an old man bar - I can only remember three here - 1) Lots of rubbish on the floor 2) A grumpy old man (of course) 3) Quick and goood quality coffee and food.
Anyway here's our chance to add our essential items in an "old man bar". Here's mine for starters...

i) El Gordo tickets posted on the wall
ii) Ham(s)
iii) A large range of whiskies.
iv) An annoying fruit machine or 2 in the corner.

Interesting thread. A few more things:
* customers in overalls;
* slap-on paintwork;
* packed on Sunday mornings;
* industrial-strength lighting.

I think we can make a useful distinction between an OMB and a tasca. The latter is a traditional-style bar (and much more interesting than what you find around, say, Huertas). Even now, tascas survive all over the city, even very close to Sol. Long may they continue.

The place on C/Calatrava mentioned in the In Madrid article does indeed have a name, but I think the name only appears on the price list. Casa somebody IIRC.

Anyone know what´s happening at Casa Montés on C/Lavapiés?(great example of a tasca which is not an OMB).
Apparently César (the owner) was robbed and assaulted a few weeks ago on his way home. The word is that he is to give it up.
