I used to live in Madrid and Palazzos gelato kept me sane. I lived there in the spring and summer however so I am not sure if it is open in the winter. There are several locations including two on Gran Via. Does anyone here know if they are open in the Winter because I will be there on January 14th and need my fix!!!
Oh Ricci--yes, how I love that place! The dulce de leche, avellana, manzana verde... In general I think their creamy ones are better than their sorbets.
In second place is the fancy Argentine place on Alberto Aguilera (Giangrossi, or something like that?), which gets special points for hipness and comfy chairs.

not to mention their free wifi
come to think of it, there is another place (new-ish) at the end of cava baja on your left as you walk down. almost in the plaza del humilladero. they do excellent ice cream, shakes, etc...
it is called "la tomasa" or something like that, will have to confirm.
as we think of more places, palazzo actually moves lower and lower on the list.
worth noting is the cafe and pistacio at ricci but they rotate flavors every day so you may not catch them when you go.
you could go by and if they do not have cafe and/or pistacio that day, you could just head over to sol and get your fix at palazzo.
funny you love cafe and pistacio, those are the only 2 flavors of ice cream i can't stand
well, as they say here... "para gustos, colores". translates literally to "for tastes, colors" and means there are as many colors as their are tastes. to each his/her own.
Ricci just opened up a store in La Latina, less than a block from my house. It's on c/Toledo (Toledo 47, I think) in the block just north of the La Latina Metro stop, east side of the street. It's a cute place and has a few tables--more seating than the Huertas location.
They also make crepes to order. And Italian espresso. And it's right next to Caramelos Paco for those who want to risk a sugar-induced coma. I'm so excited...

a warning about the ricci on calle toledo. i had not been for creppes in a few months. they used to be awesome but ena and i went back today to have some and they were CRAPOLA
they used to be spongy, golden and delic!!! now it seems they have changed them and they taste like pieces of paper
not only that but the scoop of ice cream they now put on them when you order them with ice cream is miniscule while it used to be a decent size. less whipped cream too.
and they raised the price on top of it all.
the ricci on calle toledo in la latina had problems as it was losing money so they decided to add meals during the day so when we sat down at a table today, we were told w could not eat there as it was only for meals (not creppes nor ice cream) and we had to sit at the bar. then we were served the nasty-assed creppes.
we did not eat them and when i told the owner (she is there more now than she used to be) the crepped were nowhere near what they used to be, all she could say was that they changed the grill on them (they who? no idea).
so, we could not even eat them they were so aweful and we left them on the counter. she still charged us for them even though i said we were not eating them. on the way out i told her i was never going back and she smiled and shrugged her shoulders
they have lowered the portions and quality and raised the prices and to top it all off the service is also garbage. ena oredered a coffee that she never saw, perhaps the order for 2 creppes and a coffee was too much for the waitress to handle
so, i am adding that ricci on call toledo (just that one as the others in madrid are still worth visiting) to my madrid hall of shame.
