hey all...
on my daily jog, i whizzed by El Ventorrillo on the corner of Calle Bailen and the Viaducto...and it is open!!!

if you don't know it here is an overview from my new book....(jejeje...i can't believe i'm saying that!)
If you are in town between April and October, schedule an evening drink on the terrace of VENTORRILLO. Run by the charming Señora Pura (she of the black beehive hairdo), this is your run-of-the-mill café/bar with homemade Spanish goodies from croquetas to tortilla. But then there is the view. Situated on the corner of Bailén and Morería, at the opposite end of the Segovia viaduct from the Palacio Real, the terrace looks out over the western edge of the city clear out to the blue rise of the Sierra Guadarrama mountains. The sunset will leave you speechless. If you visit the Goyas in the Prado, you'll see the same eternal sky in several of his works.

...and its bloody expensive for what it is.

Alternatively, buy your other half a large bottle of Mahou from the Chino a bit further down the street, sit down on the grass just the other side of the cafe, and have yourself a micro-botellon for less than half the price! cool (who says i don't know how to charm a girl?)

I love that spot, too. I'm mostly in the mini-botellón boat--I like to go to the end of Las Vistillas--past where the triumphant naked lady statue is. The view is best at this time of year--before the trees get all of their leaves.

But every once in a while, we splurge on the terraza to impress out of town guests... Even the hulking Almudena looks pretty from there. There's another nice little terraza in summer that is just under the viaduct. It doesn't have the same view, but it's a nice spot.

What are some other favorite terrazas? Let's get a list going!

hey don't you mean carrerra de san francisco nah nah

viajero is fine, but if you want a terrace experience with a whole lot less pijo posing and a lot more beer for your buck....head to the "paseo del maritimo" of lavapies...otherwise known as Calle Argumosa. between Plaza Lavapies and the Reina Sofia a wave of terraces pop up at the first hint of warmth. my fave is heladeria yoli which serves yummy granizados of coffee or lemon. their 4 euros gin tonics arent' bad either! the pierced, dreaded, and tatooed masses parading by with impossibly big dogs make for fun people watching!

Great ones! I also like Casa Granada's rooftop deck, on c/Dr. Cortezo right near the Tirsa Molina metro stop. Anyone know the door number? I can't seem to find it on the internet.

hey! i just had the most amazing lunch at casa de granada with our very own megan.

huge plate of grilled aspargus, 4 lamb chops with fried potatoes (crispy, not oily), and coffee for just 10 euros. the menu says 12, but they charged us ten!

great view and great cheap meal. they don't make you order lunch either. several tables around us were just drinking.

go...get out...get some sun...have fun...

Let me second that! I had never ordered the menú del día at Casa Granada before. It really is a great deal. And not terribly crowded, even at 2:30ish. And that view. I don't know of any better.
