Hi, everyone,
Is there an American restaurant or bar in here in Madrid in which there are Americans working there? I have seen/been to Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Irish restaurants/bars, but is a place that is authentically American and not a chain (like Foster´s or Tony Roma´s?)

Thanks!

CaliforniaGirl, out of curiosity, why you would want to find a place like that? die laughing

try TGIF on gran vía down by the plaza de españa (where cine azul used to be).

not sure if they are spaniards who speak perfect american english (no comments from the brits on that one roll eyes) or americans who speak perfect spanish but there are a few waiters (managers?) in there who could be american.

i was in there last week and there was a spanish looking guy who i think was a manager but he spoke english like an american.

the majority of the waiters are spanish however.

saludos,
jer...

There are several restaurants run by Americans, but that doesn't mean they do american food....

www.restaurantememento.com is run by Karen Bell

www.divinalacocina.com is run by Chad Kenyon

Gumbo (C/Pez) is run by Mathew....last name escapes me (he is from New Orleans)

As for the worst, most vile "american" food i've ever had, try Fosters. i've been forced to eat there three times by spaniards and each time i barely choked down prepacked deepfried onion rings, chewy, unsavory ribs, and a burger that tasted like cardboard.

on the other hand, alfredos bbq (near cuzco) Calle Juan Hurtado de Mendoza, 11, Madrid, Spain 28036 · 91-345-16-39 is run by an ex-new yorker (al) and the burgers are pretty dang good.

i agree, fosters is HORRID!!! i went once with ena years ago to the one in the plaza de isabel ii. NAAAAAASTY but the spaniards seem to eat that crap up nutz

by the way, they claim to be an american rest. since 19(?). i have never seen one in the u.s.a. though roll eyes

ena and i like fridays though, especially the chicken fingers and the jack daniels strips yummy the ribs are great and their burgers are pretty goood too.

i think CaliforniaGirl (CG, correct me if I am wrong) is looking for a restaurant with a bunch of american employees and not just owned by an american.

i think it will be hard (impossible?) to fine one.

I went to Gumbo's for the first time two weeks ago. The fried green tomatos were yummy, about the only thing I really liked. I take that back, we ordered the fried bananas for dessert and the molasses sauce with vanilla ice cream was the bomb! However the margarita I ordered was expensive and the worst I've ever had.

Can we please stick to the original question?

I highly doubt that there's a place like this in Madrid, due to the fact that work visa are hard to obtain for NON-EU citizens who aren't married to EU Nationals.

In this case I'm going to disagree with you Shawn. I think it's totally relevant to the question as to whether the food in the so called 'American Restaurants' is any good. If the foods bad, your not likely to find many Americans there.

And for the record, I'm on board with the others, Fosters is crap!

hey.

Bonnie, i think the point Shawn is making is that the original question is not being covered and i agree. i tried to answer it with my friday's response above but then people got into discussing food quality.

the only question posed by CaliforniaGirl was..."Is there an American restaurant or bar in here in Madrid in which there are Americans working there?"

she never asked about the quality of the food served. asking for a place that is "authentically American" is not asking if the food is good just in case anyone was reading into her post.

i think CaliforniaGirl needs to tell us if she indeed is just looking for a bunch of americans working at an american restaurant as it would seem from her opening post or if she is looking for a restaurant with good american food.

in the latter case, i think she would (should) have posed that question in the first place.

Thanks, Jer. I wonder if California Girl will return and clarify what the question really is.

Ah yes, but she said
quote:
authentically American
which I take to mean as rather unhealthy but tasty food (like from a diner for example). So whats the point of telling her about a restaurant when you know the food is crap? Americans aren't going to hang out there. We didn't develope our weight/food issues by eating disgusting tasting food.

However I take your point and my impression is that the majority of short term Americans here teach English as restaurant work doesn't pay as well. This means your going to be hard pressed to find an establishment staffed by them.

hey, i haven't been to gumbo in ages, but i doubt they have oyster po-boys. why? oysters are too expensive in spain to go frying them up and piling them on a slab of bread!

on a side note, why is everyone so upset that we are talking about restaurants with american food rather than "where americans work"...after all, i started a thread on diets and someone turned it into a debate 7up cake...nothing at all to do with diets. did i get my suddenly too large panties in a bunch? no.

maybe some chilling out is needed around here!

I don't consider this to be totally off thread, but if it is I'm sure someone will tell me wink

Does anyone one know of a restaurant (or bakery) that makes American style lemon meringue pie?

I'm going to end up making one of my own for now but I'm having cravings and with the weather heating up I'm not going to feel much like baking soon.

Thanks for all the opinions & suggestions. I love that the question stimulated such a debate. I had been to Fosters Hollywood out of curiosity because my students were always going on about it. However, I wasn´t impressed. The Gumbo restaurant sounds good, I may try it.
