Hey
How come my post about a lovely 4th July party turn this thread to deal with me being a Jewish eating kosher/nonkosher food??? nutz

Yes Angelo I'm Jewish, I'm Israeli, I eat pork, and I love seafood. Although I come from a very orthodox family and I know the rules very well, I don't keep kosher same as many other Israelis.
If you'll ever visit Israel you'll find out you can buy and eat there what ever you desire.

well....back to the party. IT was great. There were a few mm-ers there, but even more...there were over 200 english-speakers from Madrid there. I met a few executive types, a writer, a couple of musicians, two lawyers (one with the tupperware corp in case anyone needs some), two filmmakers, lots of small biz owners, and english teachers too.
i wish i had made more of an effort to invite you guys. it was really great to meet so many long-term american expats in madrid.
it would have also been a great place for jer to promote TBS. too bad we didn't think of that. well, they are planning another big party at halloween with a similarly expected turnout.

and...lest the thread monitors get in a fuss...the food.....

i am a rib fanatic and these were the best i've ever had outside of the states. they were meaty and thick with a savory dry rub. the bbq dipping sauce on the side was a little thin for my taste, but it was yummy. the onion rings were freshly battered, not those icky frozen things they sell at Fosters. they also had a great happy hour until 8pm. 1.20 for any icy cold coronita.

i've eaten at other Ribs locations, but this one in Arturo Soria (Gregorio Benetiz, 4) rocked. Great, tree-covered terrace as well.

Candy,

Thanks for that review. I've also heard good things about that place from one of my private students. He goes there a lot for the ribs.

Keep eating and giving us great reviews, but don't eat too much. You and I do have to maintain our girlie figures.

Nava,

You keep on eating what you want. As long as the food brings you enjoy, I am fine with that.

Shawn

Yeah that's right Nava, you must do as you see fit & proper in this world, you need not explain it to anybody.
I have not been to Israel before, and so I'm surprised to hear what you say about that, but I suppose things must have changed a lot over the last 60 years. Que pena!!

As an American how do you become an expert on English fishandchips?? Iv eaten plenty of English chips and Fat Tonys is better than most places in England!!!

Its not gourmet cuisine in there but for the price your paying there isnt a better place for fast food in Madrid.

Also I like the atmosphere in there, everytime Iv been there has been more Spanish than expats. Another bonus is that its actually still serving at 2.30am (unlike most places) just when you need that kind of food!!!!

hey guirigirl.

nobody said they were an expert.

anyone who spends a decent amt. of time in the u.k. can get a good feel for a decent chippy, no need to be british. my brother is married to a brit and has lived there for about 12 years so we visit them often.

the fish in a nice fish & chips should have a light and fluffy batter.

the fish in the fish & chips at fat tony's is greeeeeaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzyyyyyyyy as it gets and downright nasty! yuck

the chips are soggy, soggy, soggy. unfortunately, they do the chips like the spanish restaurants do their patatas fritas.

i went when they were first opened and have not been back, maybe they have improved but it was so yuckoooo the time i tried that i am afraid to try again.

the ONLY thing the place has going for it is that, yes, it is open very late but at that hour most who wander in are so pissed that they could not give a rats ass what they are eating die laughing

it is also the only place in madrid that does fish & chips so the chippy-missin brits have no choice but to get their fixes at tony's eeker but if a real chippy opens here you will see the difference.

saludos,
jer...

Maybe, under all that crispy greasy vinegary deliciousness, a rat´s ass is exactly what they got!

i've eaten twice at fat tony's and both times it was god-awful.

as for fish and chips, it is also a specialty of north-eastern usa....i ate a lot of really good fish n chips in boston and roundabouts. there they usually use a delicious thick beer batter...yummmm!

Hey guys! has anyone tried that new 50's diner on Calle Amaniel?? it's called Peggy Sue's??? I've heard it's totally authentic but super small, so go early or at a strange time. I can't wait to try it! If anyone's tried it, let us know!

seems they have a mean burger but unfortunately, all the reviews are by spaniards and... well, a good burger to a spaniard can also mean mcdonalds roll eyes so one of us americanos is gonna have to go and confirm.

on my way! yummy
