Hey all, upon the recommendation of "Candela", we (Candela, myself, Adrian and Desha) went to the new New Orleans Cuisine spot appropriately called "Gumbo" the other day for lunch.

I had a men del da composed of a "pastel de guisantes y gambsas" (pea & shrimp pie) for first plate and then "pollo al ajillo" (garlic chicken) for the second plate.

I also tasted a bit of Candela's "tomates verdes fritos" (fried green tomatoes) which were absolutely amazing.

Basically, everything was Y-U-M-M-Y L-I-S-H-Y L-I-S-H (NY Times food critic could not have expressed it any better Big Grin )

GUMBO
C/. del Pez, 15.
Tel.: 91 532 63 61.
(tucked away just north of Gran Va, click HERE for the LaNetro map).

The place is small, quaint and not too expensive (men del da = 8€, other dishes 4-8€Wink and worth a visit.

The only critique I had was that the portions were too small on the "men del da".

Overall, a great new (and different) restaurant.

Saludos,
jer...

p.d. The desertts are killer, especially the Banana whatever it was caled that Candela ordered

Jer,

I haven't had friend green tomatoes in whenever. My mom used to make them and I love cooking them. I have to eat there when I finally get to Madrid.

I also make a gumbo of tomatoes, chicken and okra que est para chuparse los dedos. Big Grin

Jer,
The Cajun's have a delicious banana dessert called Banana's Foster Dessert, was this the dessert you liked?

Bananas Forster

Banana's Foster
 cup ( stick) butter
1 cup brown sugar
 teaspoon cinnamon
 cup banana liqueur
4 bananas, cut in half
lengthwise, then halved
cup dark rum preferrably Cuban Rum!
4 scoops vanilla ice cream

Combine the butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a flamb pan or skillet. Place the pan over low heat either on an alcohol burner or on top of the stove, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the banana liqueur, then place the bananas in the pan. When the banana sections soften and begin to brown, carefully add the rum. Continue to cook the sauce until the rum is hot, then tip the pan slightly to ignite the rum. When the flames subside, lift the bananas out of the pan and place four pieces over each portion of ice cream. Generously spoon warm sauce over the top of the ice cream and serve immediately.

Delicioso!!!!!

Sue, here in the South we eat a lot of Fried Green Tomatoes as well as Green Tomato sandwiches and Fried Red Tomatoes. Here is a simple recipe for fried green tomatoes:

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

2 egg whites, beaten lightly
Salt & fresh ground pepper
2 med. green tomatoes, sliced about 1/4 inch thick
Flour for dredging
Corn oil for frying
Add salt and pepper to egg whites.

Dip tomato slices in egg whites, then dust lightly with flour. In the meantime, heat about 3/4 inch oil in a medium skillet. When hot, gently put in tomato slices, brown lightly on both sides, blot on paper towels and serve immediately. Serves 4.

Then, here's the recipe from the Whistle Stop Caf : "I may be sitting here at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home, but in my mind I'm over at the Whistle Stop Cafe having a plate of Fried Green Tomatoes."

"FRIED GREEN TOMATOES"

1 c. cornmeal
1/2 c. flour
1 tbsp. sugar
Oil or shortening for frying
2 lbs. green tomatoes, sliced 1/2 inch thick
Salt and pepper to taste
Mix the cornmeal, flour and sugar. Dredge the sides of teh tomatoes in the mixture. Put shortening in iron skillet about 1/4 inch. Heat over medium high. Fry about 2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Put on salt and pepper. Serves 4.

You really can't go wrong with this recipe. It's great for a summer evening with a Margarita on the side! Big Grin

Thanks Booklady! I love your recipes, and I love the film! Smiler I confess that I've only started to eat 'tomates al natural' a few months ago, and I'm 32! Eeker I used to only eat them in sauces, cooked, etc....So I'm looking forward to try anything that involves them now. Roll Eyes

El tomato is the BEST veggie on the face of the earth, especially "al natural" (raw), can't believe it took you 32 yrs. to discover it pim. Did you not eat salads growing up? Confused

Booklady, that "Banana's Foster" looks a LOT like the desert that Candela ordered and that I tried and went to heaven from but I would need Candela to pop in and confirm...

She must be a busy gal, prepping for her 3 week road trip accross the U.S.A. this month Cool

Candeeeeeeeeeeellllllaaaaaaaa???

Ok, those are some SERIOUSLY green tomatoes in that photo Booklady Big Grin I do not get them that green here but can usually find pretty good ones to fry up if I try a few different "mercados" (markets).

madsue, is it gonna be impossible for you to find greenies on Lanzarote or what?

Booklady, I WILL try your recipe above for Fried Green Tomatoes since up til now I have been doing half-assed and just slapping flour on them after dipping them in egg and then frying away

I am such a slacker but they are not bad the fast way I make em so I can't wait to do it right.

Between my Fried Green Tomatoes and my pattented Chicken Parm. (tonytorero and family have had the honor), no wonder Ena fell in love with me :l: Certainly was not my good looks and charm :jeje:

Probably, jer, but as I said, my neighbours have plants growing so if I smile nicely, they may give me some tomatoes before they get ripe. Though, thinking about it, they think I am mad enough already, so it will just confirm their suspicions if I ask for green tomatoes :jeje:

Ill let you know if I find any!! (Bought or appropriated Wink )

OK board people, after a long absence (a time traditionally associated with increasing the fondness quotient, by the way) I'm back! Mainly to stop Jer whining that "I don't post any more, something's come between us, yadda yadda yadda". In all fairness, I should have been back here sooner to let you guys know:

a) I'm loving Madrid
b) Jeremy IS as jammy as I suspected
c) as soon as I actually have an apartment with a phone line, DSL etc, I'll be back more often.

So, Gumbo:

You may remember my vegetarian handicap is unusually high for Spain, so places like this are good for me because they actually understand the concept that vegetables are not just decorative bystanders but can be tasty too! OK, I have been introduced to a few places that will serve fairly hearty, basic fare of a vegetable nature, but it's much harder to find a joint that can present a more delicate offering.

Gumbo have a couple of veggie options, and if I had one criticism it would be that they include the somewhat ubiquitous ones of "melted goats cheese with toastiness" and "spinachy crepes". Both were absolutely delicious, but for a long-term veggie eating out they're almost up there with mushroom risotto/stroganoff on the Top 10 Veggie Menu Items list. I'm being picky I know, because any restaurant in Madrid that can offer alternatives to tortilla espanola, menestra de verdura or patatas bravas (you CAN have too much of a good thing) has to be worth visiting. Coupled with the mellow atmosphere, friendly staff and good company (except for that pesky Jeremy guy who keeps showing up) I'd say Gumbo gets a jumbo thumbs-up.

I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.

Hey madsue...

... if we do not hear from you within 48 hrs, I will call the police.

"cornmeal" is "cornflour" or "harina de maz" (as close as it gets).

I would mail you the green tomatoes from the mainland but they might ripen up during shipping, some nerve those tomatoes have :jeje:

Aha!! Got that here!! For some reason I thought cornmeal was not as fine as harina de maiz!! It makes a great batter with egg whites for gambas.

Well jer, much appreciated the thought of the tommies being sent from Madrid by post, but knowing the time it takes between here and Madrid they are likely to be not only overripe but completely dried out!!! Smiler

Roll on darkness (my old friend!!) :jeje:
