Does anyone know specifically what the difference is in a cerveceria and any other tasca that or bar that serves beer? This is for an article I am doing? Also how many brands of Spanish (not foreign-licensed) beers are there actually? And are there any boutique-type small production beers starting to crop up, as has been the case for many years in the US?

Hey Gerry, as far as I know:

1) A "Cervecera" sells beers and tapas and some dishes.

2) a "Tasca" is more of a restaurant but also does beer, wine, etc...

Although these are generalizations, one seems always to blend into another and they all end up doing the same thing in the end, serving beer, wine, food, etc...

Sorry if I confused the hell out of ya Eeker

Maybe a true "beer buff" will pop in and clear this up for you.

I would love to see that article when it is done Big Grin

Saludos,

This I know, but cervecerias also sell wine and sometimes the only thing they have is a couple of beers on tap. But then most of the tascas do too. I just wonder if there is anything at all that sets a cerveceria apart as such. I guess it is probably any place that emphasizes beer over other drinks and decides to call itself a cerveceria. There has to be some razon behind this.

I'd say many (if not most) cerveceras don't serve wine, just as many night clubs don't either! Eeker
Also in many of them the only food you can get are peanuts, potato chips, pop-corn, etc....,while in tascas, although they might not be restaurant-like at all, you're much more likely to find "more serious" food (tapas).

That has not been my experience. Most cervecerias also have wine and other drinks and most of the ones I have been in also offer tapas. For example, Cerveceria Alemana and most of the places on Santa Ana. Los Gatos. Cervantes Cerveceria, Madrid, . Ms de 20 raciones y 20 tapas para elegir, con cerveza bien tirada. Cer. Correos, Madrid, tapas. Tapas-Tapas and many others in Barcelona. If fact I have been in very few cervecerias that serve nothing but beer, perhaps none I can remember.

Hey Gerry and all, here is what the "Real Academia de la Lengua Espaola" ( www.rae.es ) has to say about a "cervecera"...

quote:
cervecera. (De cervecero).
1. f. Fbrica de cerveza.
2. f. Local donde se vende y se toma cerveza.
That help? Big Grin
