I am going to have some free time in Spain this fall and may have access to a vehicle, so I have considered trying out some ventas. We had experienced several ventas in Andalucia a couple years ago, and found the food wonderful and cheap! So I wanted to do it again. Does anyone have any favorites? (Oh yeah, be sure to let me know where they are, too!)

Hey Booklady, not sure if you were joking but just in case... the word "venta" in Spanish also means "Inn" (as in "guest house") although it is not commonly used in today's Spanish.

Yes, the ventas we went to were more like small family run restaurants-generally, in the middle of nowhere! We hit 3-4 and I think only one of them looked to have any rental cottages. They were all small and charming. One had deer meat stew as the special, and was surprisingly good. Another was memorable for all the cats that roamed around our feet! Let me see if I can upload the picture of one.....

Obviously, I cannot just post a picture. So I am linking to my, as yet, incomplete Webpage:

See-- it doesn't even have a name yet!! But I posted a pic of one of the ventas there.....

I was introduced to eating in ventas when I visited friends outside Benidorm. They told me that they were originally truck stops for the lorry drivers. I would love to be able to tell you the names of some we ate in, as most had wonderful (and cheap) menues. One in particular was just past El Cisne on the left hand side on your way into Benidorm on the old road coming from Alfaz del Pi. Looked like an old shack but the food.....

Hey Laidback, since ventas are mostly part of "turismo rural", try www.guiamadridrural.com , you will find a few options (although the web needs to grow a bit).

Another word often used for "venta" is "posada", that should help you in your search.

Posada generally won't help much. A venta is a roadside eating place, usually with outdoor al fresco dining in good weather. Some of the ones in Andalucia are legendary and many were hotbeds of flamenco years ago. Sevilla and Cadiz in particular are the best place to find them, though the exist all around Andalucia. In Sevilla province, some are Casa Pinichi in Alcala de Guadaira, Venta La Piedra en Constantina, Casa Marquez and Casa Pascual en Coria del Rio, El Ancla en Dos Hermanas, the great Casa Curro en El Coronil (in the sierra de Cadiz area), Taberna El Velero en La Puebla del Rio, and Ventorillo Canario en Santiponce (Italica). Outside many towns and villages in Cadiz and Malaga provinces, you will find good ventas. In San Fernando (Cadiz), there is Los Tarantas and the really legendary flamenco spot, Venta de Vargas. Outside Olvera in front of the emita of Los Remedios is a good venta. At the entrance to Vejer de la Frontera is the Venta Pinto. And, between Jerez and Sanlucar is Venta Antonio, but that is an expensive seafood emporium, a luxury.

Smiler Now THAT was the answer I was looking for-- Thanks Gerry. Where did you find out about these? I was taken by locals when I went in 2001 and haven't been able to find anything online or in my guide books about them. You should know I am now hunting out my map to see which of this wonderful list I can check out!!!

If you roam around the villages and towns of Andalucia, you find plenty of them. The food is seldom spectacular, but can often be quite good. Tapas, a salad, small grilled sardines, filete con patatas, bean dishes, trout, etc. Simple wines. Usually very simple fare, but good and sitting outside in Andalucia can be delicious. The Andalucian chiringuitos, along beaches in towns, where they have not legislate them out of existence are of the same genre, they are just not roadhouses.

my favorite Venta experiences have been along the main highway between Malaga and Madrid, in the heart of La Mancha. The highway is spotted with these truck stops that specialize in the local manchego cheese -- when it's fresh, with some olives and tinto tipico, it's a perfect way to break up that everlasting drive. (especially if you spread out a blanket under the tree and have a kip after)
