I have been in Spain only once and that was back in 1962, so my knowledge of the language is zero.

I used the search function but did not find what I wanted(probably not entering the right Q's).

I have been invited to a "Tapas Dinner" in Madrid at Restaurant Juan Luis, Santa Engracia # 13. My question is: what are "Tapas".

The search function told me places to get them and how enjoyable they are, but not what the makeup/construction is.

Tapa is a small dish of food, normally traditional Spanish food. In some places they are free and you get them when you ask for a drink. In other places you have to pay for them, but normally in those cases, the tapas are bigger.
You can always come to Spain, Colin, and "taste" it by yourself. Big Grin

Un saludo

Colin:
The makeup of Tapas is as varied as Spain. It's a bit like asking "what are appetizers made of?" Some tapas are as simple as a few olives in a dish. Others are slim slices of tortill (potato omelette,) or Ensalada Russe -- a fab potato salad. My favorite is Croquetas, little fried potato/ham balls. Tapas became rather trendy at fern bars here in the USA a few years ago, so your local library's cookery book section should have a couple of books of Tapas recipes.
All go very well with a glass or two of fino sherry; often the bar gives you a free tapa when you order a drink.
Enjoy!
