I was planning a two week trip to Spain, and I had the following rough itinerary:

3 days in Madrid
3 days in San Sebastian/Bilbao
2 days in Barcelona
then 6 days in Ibiza

I'm new to Spain, but I've backpacked before through different parts of Europe. Could someone tell me if this itinerary will give me a good feeling for Spain, or would you recommend other places? How long will it take to get from city to city by train?

I also heard there is some sort of Festival happening at the end of July in Madrid?

Also, what are the restaurants I HAVE to try while I'm in Madrid?

thanks for any advice!

Hey Derek, the itin looks good but skip Bilbao (or just pop in, go tot the Gugie and then bail) since there is really not much there.

ALso, if ya ask me, 6 days in Ibiza is major OVERKILL. Spend more time in Madrid &/or Barcelona instead and do like 2-3 on Ibiza.

The trian info you need (as far as distances and time on the trains) is all at http://www.renfe.es/ingles/hir/index.html - just takes some research that's all Big Grin

I think the festival you are thinking of at the end of July in Madrid is are the "Fiestas de San Lorenzo, San Cayetano and the Virgen de la Paloma" but they are the first 2 weeks in AUGUST, not July. See my Madrid Calendar at http://www.multimadrid.com/madrid_calendar/mad_calendar.htm for more.

Woooohooo, as for food and restaurants, all I can recommend is that you take a good loooooong look at the food forum on this board by CLICKING HERE Big Grin

Have a great time, I am sure you will.

Saludos,
jer...

Hi Derek,
I agree with Jer, go to Bilbao for the Guggenheim, which is great, but otherwise not much there. I think more than two days in Barcelona would be better...there is a lot to see, especially with it being the year of Gaudi. San Sebastian is wonderful and you can have great beach time there if the weather is good. Have a great time!
