Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good hair salon in Madrid with stylists who speak English?? I'm in desperate need of a hair cut but don't want to end up in hair hell because of the language barrier.

Uh-uh, this could be one of those can of worm threads. Personally I either wear my hair really long or pretty much shave my head (myself) so I can't provide much info. Furthermore, since I'm part black I've only gone to the Dominican or African places here when I've wanted something a little different or fancy like braids or extensions or a specific hair product.
But from what I've heard, Spaniards and foreigners living here don't seem to agree on this issue. I've heard Spanish women complaining that they couldn't wait to get back to Spain to get a decent haircut and American women of the exact opposite, how if you go the hairdresser here you end up looking like all the other Spanish girls at the shop instead of what you asked for, how they always insist on highlights, etc. etc.
Good luck to you divina, hope you find a good place and get great results.

i hate going to the hairdressers, but i found this great place called focus on calle la palma, 34 (metro: tribunal or noviciado).

cut and blow dry is about 8.50 and they even give you a head massage. i've already brought my sister, brother-in-law and flatmate and they all loved it!

just look up the vocab and flick thru the mags, i'm confident they'll do a good job, and they have cameras, so you can monitor the progress at the back!

in case you're wondering, i'm not friends with these ppl or anything, it's just i *really* hate hairdressers. the previous place i went to in madrid, i walked out of mid-cut cos it was shit and i've been to another place where they asked me what they would do about my (boppy) ear! (off with it, i say!)

check focus out, it's a great spot!

Hey divina, well, this is out of my territory since I only know where my gal gets cuts and they do not do the "English thing" Frowner

OK, this was originally posted by Queensita...

My personal favorite is Nicholas, it's at metro Diego de Leon, if you get off the brown line (line 4), it's got a blue and yellow sign, walk ins completely welcome, pretty cheap, used to be 1000 ptas for a haircut, and my friend said it's pretty much the same now, in euros. It's on Conde de Pealver, one block away from the Diego metro stop, walking away from Francisco Silvela, and towards Goya. It will be on your right. It's great!!! I love it! And they also have waxing in their downstairs facility, also great and cheap! Hope that helps, Joy
... on the thread HERE but we are not yet sure if they speak or understand English.

Maybe Joy can answer that?

Hey, many moons ago I also used to see an ad in the InMadrid newspaper and the Broadsheet magazine for a mobile native Eglish speaking hairdresser in Madrid. I looked through this month's InMadrid but can't find it. I do not have the new Braodsheet, maybe you can get a hold of one and see if that person is still around.

I had a business associate visit recently and she went to the hotel salon where she was staying to get a manicure. She had brought her own nail color from the U.S., but the manicurist (probably wearing one of those fancy white lab coats) REFUSED to use it! The manicurist insisted that the women in Madrid wouldn't wear such a dark color, and would only use a color of her own choosing. Whatever happened to "The customer is always right?"

Get a picture of what you want done with your hair. I would also recommend bringing a ruler to show your stylist exactly how much you want cut off. My girlfriends and I still laugh at the Eeker "Spanish Mullet" Eeker we all ended up with. The salon we went to knew one haircut and one hair cut ONLY! However, the coloring and perming products used on my hair were far better than ANYTHING I've found in the States. Good luck!! Wink

Hello, I just moved here from the States and am wondering if there is any new information about English-speaking stylists. I had been going to the same guy in the U.S. for eight years and he used some pretty cool techniques to make me look half-way presentable. smiler I read some of the posts here but they're fairly old. Anybody know of someone who is great with men's hair and speaks English? Thanks!
