I'll be staying the month of July in an apartment very near the Plaza de Colon. Anyone have any favorite restaurants in the area, or places to buy sandwiches etcetera and stock my refrigerator? Any other tips/observations on the Colon area welcome as well.

Gracias,

Dinty

Hi !!
A nice place for a special dinner with your wife might be Bomarzo. Its a nice and small restaurant, "desing" sytile, in the trendiest part of Salamanca area. The address is :

Bomarzo
C/ Jorge Juan 16 (metro Serrano)
Telephone : 91 4315840 or 91 431 5950. Its closed saturdays midday and sundays. You should book a table in advance, as usually is full. Prices, about 15-25 €.

About a place for everyday meals..... theres a lot of restaurants in that area, including Hard Rock Cafe Smiler , but for sandwiches and things like that, Ill suggest Rodilla (Ill check if theres any nearby).

If you'd like to try a veggie / what-no-ham? option, La Gallette at 10, Barbara de Braganza is not bad. Better in the evening, it's actually two restaurants side by side, one more veggie than the other. Has a fairly original menu. Tel is 913 193 148, probably worth booking ahead.

Hi all !

Heres another one,

La Finca de Susana
C/ Arlaban 4 (Metro Sevilla)
Tel. 91 3693557

Its a great place, the owners are the same as La Gloria de Montera.
You can not book a table in advance, so my advice is to get there as early as possible to get a nice table (lets say about 8 pm - 8:30 pm, its always crowed).Ive been there a lot of times, food is quite good and prices are reasonable. Big Grin

There is also Bazaar on C/Libertad owned by the same people as la finca de susana etc. One of my fav meat places is La Carreta on Barbieri, they close late at midday and even later at nightime. One of the great classic economicos is Bogota on C/Belen another curious place is El Cisne Azul on Gravina, small and a little pricey but the produce is superb, they also specialise in different types of mushrooms and no they don't.

By the way, the Castellana cuts a swathe through the center of Madrid, the west side is more traditional and the East side is more up-market. You'll probably find everything you want in staggering distance, find your nearest market and you can get all the fresh stuff you want. I go the one on Barcelo and Mejia Lequerica. You've also got some of the very cool terrazas on Recolletos, Cafe Gijon, El Espejo etc. but they don't serve pints so I don't go there.

Hi again Smiler

Theres a few places more Ive been to, that are nice:

La Taquera de Birra
Plaza de las Comendadoras, 2 (Metro San Bernardo & Noviciado)
Tel. 915228049
Mexican food, nice place, specially in summer, as you can sit down outside. Theres many other places in Plaza de las Comendadoras.

La Fabrica
C/ Genova 21 (Metro Coln)
Tel. 913195134
German food....and beer too

And for having a nice ice-cream, teas, caipirias, mojitos, etc, my fav. caf :
Caf de Ruiz
C/ del Ruiz 11 (Metro Bilbao)
Sorry, I wasnt able to find the phone number
Open from 15:00 to 03:00
Nice old-fashioned cafe with marmol tables. Perfect for a sunday afternoon Big Grin

Hey dinty, just so ya know, the vast majority of the places mentioned here are not near the Plaza de Coln which was the topic of this thread.

Not a bad thing since I prefer to try many areas of the city for good eats but I just wanted you to realize (if you had not already done so on your own) that the thread has become a general list of good places to eat.

Saludos,
jer...

A good place to have a beer would be Cervezera Santa Barbara, on Plaza Santa Barbara, located a little to the west of Plaza de Colon

If you get hungry for american food there is a place a couple blocks north of colon and 1 block east. It is called something like 'Knight and Squire' or 'El Nait'. It has good hamburgers.
