Hi All,

I was scanning the internet looking for a Swing dancing society in Madrid but with out much luck. Is there anyone here in the scene or who knows of places to go for Swing dancing or Lindy Hop?

Cheers,
Bonnie

nanny babe...you need to change that heading. i saw "swinging" and thought swinging as in sex clubs and partner swapping.

Am I the only one????

I found this site, but I'm not sure if it's a school or a disco. Does anyone know?

Questionable swing dancing venue

Ok, I finally got my act together (it only took a year) and went swing dancing. I found an academy over in Diego de Leon that I've know about for over a year but I never had the spare cash. They offer one Swing/Lindy Hop group class every friday night but because it's the middle of the class year you have to get permission from the instructer to join. Guess who got in? I'm super siked! As it turns out though, there isn't anywhere to Swing dance. Turns out what I know as swing dancing is considered Rock'n'Roll here and whats refered to as West Coast Swing in the States is what they consider swing in Spain. I don't know about the rest of Europe, but that could explain why I had such a hard time following the people I was dancing with the one time I went swing dancing in A'dam. The instructer said you can go to one of the ballroom clubs but they play everything. A mixture of waltz, foxtrot, swing, samba, cha cha, salsa, pasa doble, etc. Can anyone recommend a good ballroom club and would you be interested in going if I organized a night. I dragged my swing shoes all the way from the states (both pairs), I need to get some use out of them.

If anyone else is interested in the dance school it's called
Escuela de Bailes de Salón A bailar
Martínez Izquierdo 14
Madrid 28028
Tlf. 91 725 08 02

One class a week for a month only costs 35 euros, and if you want to attend two a week for a month it's only 55 euros. I think this is quite reasonable as it's tons of fun. They offer just about every type of dancing you can imagine I think. You can see their class list here: Abailar Madrid Curso 05/06
After reading the website more closely it seems they are forming new classes in February, but I don't know if this includes swing. The instructor told me there's no problem finding students, but there aren't many instructors who can teach lindy hop in Madrid. It's a shame as it's such fun and it looks so cool, not to mention a great workout.

Besos,
Bonnie

I'm in! Anyone else want to come? I find out the exact directions and post them, but maybe we can meet before for a drink.

Swinging out,

Ok, wasn't very on the ball last week, sorry about that. Anyhoo, my dance academy is having a swing dancing party next Saturday night. I asked the instructor and he said I'm welcome to bring who I want. Anyone game? If I understood him correctly the majority of the music will be a mixture of East (aka Rock and Roll) and West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, and Charleston. Of of my other classmates told me today that they sometimes teach a bit of Shag so they may play that as well. Also, costumes are encouraged but not required, but you have four decades of costumes to choose from so even if you just wore jeans with the cuffs rolled up and a white dress shirt you'd fit the bill.

The details I have right now are that it starts at 9:30 at the dance academy, the info's listed above. I've sent an e-mail to the academy asking to confirm this. I have problems with comprehension so sometimes I think I've heard one thing when really it was something totally different.

For anyone who really likes lindy hop or swing dancing (like me) this is a great opportunity to get back into it, because as far as I've been able to find out it's not very popular in Madrid hence not many opportunitys to dance. The people who are in my class are a mixture of ages. The youngest I think are 21ish, and the oldest are I'm guessing in their fortys with mostly everyone else inbetween. Rather like almost all of the swing dances I've been to in the states. Only in the U.S. there were a lot more college students.

Anyway if your interested in coming either post here or post me privately. It would be cool to meet others outside of the academy to practice and go out on the occasional thursday with.

Besos,
Bonnie

Ok, good thing I sent out the e-mail because it turns out what I understood to be an academy party is in fact a birthday party for my instructor. blush Oops, however he did tell me it was ok to bring a friend. As there hasn't been an overwhelming response to this thread I don't think I have to worry about all the mmers filling the place to bursting so if there is anyone who enjoys lindy hop and wants to come, e-mail me and I'll bring you along.

Besos,
Bonnie
