Just wanted to post a quick notice for a friend of mine (and mariposita).
His band The Flail is playing at Cafe Berlin on March 6 and 7 (Tue and Wed). The cover is 8 euros. The shows start around 10:30 and there are two sets... Cafe Berlin is located at Calle Jacometrezo 4 (Metro: Callao), tel 915 21 57 52.
The New York-based group plays original modern jazz. The quintet (piano, bass, drums, sax, and trumpet) is touring France. I managed to get them to come to Madrid for a couple of days. These are the only dates they are playing in Spain!
am I not Spanish enough or something, everything here starts so late. 1st intercambio I heard about, I thought it was a missprint when they said it started at 10pm. I just can't bring myself to go out at 10:30 on a work night.

At least it is not a flamenco or salsa gig. Some of those don't start till 3am. Like that famous Camarón session at Candela that wrapped up at 11am (or so legend has it)...

Rob-- If you want to get the most of Madrid, you have to gradually readjust your internal clock. Even my five-year-old plays in the playground until 12pm in the summer! 10 is dinner time. 10:30 is early for a jazz gig... Sometimes Papa bajo gets home from work at 4:30am!

I have to agree with you on that one, when we were living near la latina there's a very popular restaraunt who's name escapes me, walk by at 9 and it's empty, 10:30 and there's a line up outside. When ever family comes and visits I take them for a walk and they are always amazed at how late everyone is up.

Yes, our friends the Flail are "de puta madre" if I do say so myself. Probably the best concert I've seen since I've been in Madrid (with all due respect to Papa Bajo).
The club did a horrendous job of (not) promoting this show. Anyone who has any interest in jazz should check them out tonight (wednesday). The show starts around 10-10:30.
