Hi all,

I wanna take the hubby out to a Mexican restaurant for his b-day, but am thinking the possibilities look pretty slim. Does anyone know of a good one in Madrid or the surrounding area? We are willing to drive an hour if necessary. If they serve jalapeños and sour cream somewhere in the meal, that would be even more awesome! yummy

Thanks!

nomi, there are actually quite a few mexican restaraunts in madrid.

ena and i like "la panza es primero" and we go to the one on calle segovia number 17 (closest to our apt.).

go to http://www.lapanzaesprimero.com, enter and then click the icon of the purple belly.

not sure if they have the jalapeños and sour cream but their nachos with guacamole are yummy! yummy

i also recommend the "pollo flor de calabaza"

saludos,
jer...

Jer, one more question. Do they serve regular meals or just appetizer things? I see things like guacamole and nachos, but not enchiladas.

hi nomi...
if you are looking for authentic, authentic...i don't know what to tell you, other than go to anycity usa. (or of course mexico!!!) oh, how i miss mexican town in detroit and warm tortillas fresh from the grill...oh and goat tacos with guacamole!!!! oohh...burritos. refried beans. huevos rancheros drenched in hot sauce...

anyway...i go to this place sometime
La Mordida
and it has always been pretty good. plus the atmosphere rocks, especially the one on c/ belen...it is very festive and colorful. also, i have always been surprised at how attentive the staff is.

Thanks, Candela and Jer.

Yeah, I figured really authentic would be pretty hard, but good margaritas are a great plus!

hey nomi, i also second what Candela says about la mordida.

i have only been there once as it is quite a bit more expensive than la panza es primero but they seemed to have more on the menu than the panza did.

saludos,
jer...

I'll throw out another suggestion:

La Taquería del Alamillo
Plaza del Alamillo, 8

It's near Plaza de la Paja in La Latina. It's got a nice ambiance and a little terraza.

But like all the other places mentioned (which we've also tried), it's probably pricier than it should be. What I would give for a little dive with an abuelita in the cocina making homemade corn tortillas and tamales...

Great Mexican food and good value?
"Al Todo Mexico", a few blocks from Plaza Espana is probably the best Mexican restaurant I've been to. Not flash in any way, just good food, good service, kick ass margaritas and a simple, authentic formula.

I can't wait to get back there again, but the missus has got us both on a diet......

I second La Mordida! La Panza es Primero is ok, the ambiance is fun, but I've had issues with them overcharging me on two occasions, so I kinda stopped going.

Another place I like is Las Mananitas on Fuencarral near <m> tribunal.

There's also "El Rey del Barrio" on one of those little streets that connects Fuencarral with Hotaleza - not farmacia, but near there. It's good too, and not as crowded as La Panza...

Have fun!

Hi Nomi,

I'd second or third "la mordida" and "a todo mexico" that candela and steve have mentioned also.

There's also a new mex that has opened up recently called "el chile verde", its in the moncloa district, I don't remember the exact street but it's around isaac peral street.

I though it was really good and what caught my eye, was the preparation and presentation of their dishes. Food and recipes evolve and it seems that they are presenting the lasted trends in mexican food.

As in regards to price, I can say it wasn't cheap, but where nowadays can you go to a nice restaurant for cheap? It came out to about 30€/head including an appetizer.

There's a lot of dishes that I didn't have a chance to try, so I have no choice but to go back there soon! hehe

Cheers,

Oooo... looks like I'm gonna have to disagree with someone. Sorry, boom_shaka, but La Mananitas on Fuencarral is one place that I have ready for the "places NOT to go in Madrid" file that Jer is preparing. Right along with "VIPS" and "GINOS".

Okay, it wasn't really expensive, but for the quality of the food it was not good value either. The food reminded me of the frozen meals you can buy in alfoil trays at the supermarket, in the same way as the lasagne at Gino's did. The margaritas came from a slushy machine, and tasted like slushies, but at four times the price. The service was unfriendly. But besides that, it was okay wink

We live just a block or two away from there, and were disappointed to have to rule La Mananitas out for future visits.

We'll definitely give La Mordida a try one day, but for the moment I'm drooling to get back to Al Todo Mexico.

No really, I mean I am literally drooling....

Cheers,
Steve

P.S.

Al Todo Mexico was SO GOOD that when they undercharged me by two margaritas, I couldn't help but bring it to their attention. They then replied in kind with a couple of free cocktails for our honesty.

I love a happy ending smiler

Steve
