Hello all! I have a friend who is new to the country and is still adapting. She´s looking for a place where she can have some fun dancing to music she understands and has asked me to recommend a place to her that has music from the 80´s/90´s or and in english or I think somewhere that plays mostly music in english would make her happy. Any recommendations?

Thanks to all in advance! smiler

hey espe3,

a few ideas - the irish pubs/bars seem to play a lot of music in English, as well as offer live music which is often in English.

if your friend wants to dance, some of the bigger discotecas have floors/rooms dedicated to different types of music, and probably play a lot of what she's looking for.

but as far as a place that doesn't play ANY spanish music?? i'm not sure it exists.

Malasaña is the area for you. They're all anglophiles there, though the music style is quite alternative, I don't know if that's what you're after.

Check out this page: Malasaña Nightlife

There's also a new bar Supersonic in Arguelles. I haven't been, but I hear its all Oasis and Blur. Also in Arguelles is Chesterfield, which I personally think is horrible, but their US RnB night on a Wednesday(?) pulls in the expat yoofs.

Damien, went to your link, yeah, I don´t think I´d recommend club Natsi to her (aside from the fact that she´s jewish) I don´t care how cute people try to be with names, I don´t see myself ever going to somewhere like that or recommending it! frowner The rest look good. Maybe you can visit more places to have a larger variety to recommend- and also hopefully more PC! smiler

hey espe3, did i miss something or did you misread "club nasti" and see it as "natsi" (which would be spelt wrong anyway).

is it a nazi club or is it a play on the word "nasty" but spelt with an "i"?

i would like to know.

i also agree with boom, pretty much any large club will have different dance levels (floors) playing different music.

saludos,
jer...

I think I know the Garaje you mean, Candy - on Pl Malasaña, right?

Candy is right, its Nasti and is indeed a relation of Nitsa in Barcelona.

Friday nights is indie night, Saturday is a mix of electronica - very danceable, but not "boom-boom-boom" type stuff. It's the kind of music with lyrics and proper songs.

Like I said, most of that area IS "alternative" (though Via Lactea is pretty mainstream). The thing is in Spain is that Spain does awful cheese well enough by themselves to bother importing it, but they're pretty lousy at good alternative music. The Spanish who seek out alternative music gravitate towards UK-US music, whereas cheesy music fans have all the Bisbals and Bustemantes they'll ever need.

By the way, regarding big clubs, I have no idea what Pacha is like, but I went to Kapital (no, its not a Marxist bar) and though it has seven floors, it was seven floors of rubbish, IMHO (OK, though I prefer guitar music, I also like drum n bass, a lot of electronica, but all I heard there was reggaeton, Spanish cheese, a bit of hiphop and bacalao).

A couple of other messageboards have been arguing over this New York Times article which has some nightclubs which (according to some boardmembers ) is for guiris and guys looking for guiris. Might be worth a try.

For the record, I think there is no need to be apologetic about the fact someone is new to the country and still 'adapting'. No matter how long you live in Spain for and how many jamónes you have in your kitchen, there is nothing wrong with saying Spanish pop is diabolical - going somewhere with a mixed crowd (Spanish-guiri) is nothing to be ashamed of.

Cervantes brings up a good point in his last paragraph. Everyone is at a different point of integration during their stay in Spain and you basically go out where you want to go out. You shouldn't be judged.

You're right, Redwood, but that wasn't what I meant. I will *always* go to Malasaña and listen to US-UK music, even if I become so integrated that I start calling myself 'Damián' (with the accent). Just like i will continue to seek out the shops that sell fresh milk rather than Tetrabrik rubbish. There's no point integrating yourself against your own good sense (UK-US music is better than Spanish pop; fresh milk is better than Tetrabrik milk).

Of course, you need to have tried Spanish pop and tetrabrik milk before you can judge.

I knew exactly what you meant. You misundersttod me. I said that you should be able to go anywhere you want without being judged. If you want to still go and listen to the music that you want, that's fine. It's nobody's business where you go to listen to music.

Sorry, I misread "your own stage" - I thought you meant we were all still on our way to integration. I see. Estamos de acuerdo, entonces.

Hey Everybody,

As a guy who sorta lives for the Madrid rock scene , I'd recommend that you check out The Wurlizer Ballroom:

http://www.myspace.com/wurlitzerballroom

Brought to you from the same people who ran Morgenstein in Malasaña, if you remember that place.

Right in the center, open until 6AM, no entrance fee if the live band is done playing, and great music (if you are into Garage Rock, Old Punk, etc).

Later gators,

Phil

Hello,

This is my recommendation:

Urban Cowboy

Dylan, Fletwood Mac, Barry White, Rolling Stones, Sting. And it's a non-smoking bar!

(this is why i'm not going, but I know some of you will like it)
