tmo, where are you from? if the u.s.a., what Chica said above was the best advice you could get. not sure about med. care in u.k. but maybe it is same style as u.s.a.?
I would say the medical care in the UK is nothing like the American style and most people here are just glad to eventually get an appointment to see a Gynaecologist, within the National Health Service.
If you are paying privately, then he/she might acknowledge that you are a human being, might ask you "how are you"? and might even manage a smile...especially when he/she gets the cheque.

and you will get certain "luxuries" if you are in a private hospital.
We(the British)revere consultants and accept that whilst they neither have the time or the inclination to get familiar with us, they are giving us the best treatment and that is what seems to be the most important issue.
Asking me if I have had a nice day, would be most inappropriate and to touch me other than in a medical procedure would be deemed to be quite unprofessional.... although the younger consultants do sometimes engage in a few minutes "chit-chat" as we like to call it here in the UK.
Brits who have come to Spain on vacation and who have had to use the private health sector, they come back speaking highly about the standards and care received from the clinics and hospitals.
We have too many immigrants and too many people living on this Island, therefore the resources are stretched and waiting times long, but the standard of care is still one of the best that you will find world wide, even if the doctors don`t say "have a nice day"
