Hi there-just got a call from Santa Lucia and it reminded me that I need to get renters insurance-so that if your stuff gets destroyed in a flood, fire, etc.-it is covered even though you don't own the apartment. Anyone have any comments on Santa Lucia or insurance?

Hey Wendy--
We've been trying to figure this out, too. In the US we always had this since renters aren't covered under homeowners' insurance. All we have been able to find is insurance for owners renting apartments out. If you find something will you let me know? I'm particularly interested in theft insurance.

Wendy, I think you should contact your landlord and ask if they already have a homeowners insurance and if it covers damage that occurs while you live there. When I rented an apartment my landlord would get her homeowners insurance to cover the expenses of a knacked pipe under my bathroom floor. Apparently I would "flood" my downstairs neighbors while taking long showers...

Homeowners insurance purely covers the property, the furniture I put in the apartment in the first place, and public liability. It doesn't include anything the renters put in, so you would need your own insurance for that.

Mariposita-I was pretty clear to the woman from Santa Lucia that I was not the owner but only rented-she sent me info on a policy that covers just the contents of the apartment-including fire, flood, theft, food spoilage if the electricity goes and takes the refrigerator with it-even, apparently, some legal assistance should someone, say, slip and fall in my house and try to sue me. It looks very reasonable-depending on how much you want to say your stuff is worth. About 180€ per year if it is 20.000€, 220€ if it is 30.000€. I think I will probably do it-you never think you need it till you have a building fire or something like I had in NYC-then you are sad you were an idiot!

Actually- I have never had renter´s insurance in the states that covered that-it was something that is included in this Spanish policy that actually surprised me!

Any updated info on this?

I would be interested in getting renter's insurance when I am living in Madrid in the following months/years.
