Hi ToniG, I can understand your concerns about the actions of ETA here in Spain but I would not exactly qualify it as live "civil unrest". Remember, your chances of having a Tim McVeigh or other paramilitary group do something similiar in the U.S.A. are scary as well. The Basque problem will probably not escalate in the near future as it usually stays the same and is pretty constant over time. Although there are assasinations, I do not think it is a reason to keep your daughter away from this otherwise amazing country. Perhaps if you were to go to the Basque country you might see some unrest such as the problems with the bus burnings by masked ETA supporters that took place a few months back but in general it is pretty calm. There was the ferry incident a few weeks ago where the police intercepted an ETA plan and materials that were to be used to set off a bomb on a ferry from Bilbao to southern England. However, I truly believe that if you let this disuade you from coming back, you are giving ETA exactly what they want . Just my opinion, jer...

Well they are at it again! First we have a girl committing suicide by blowing herself up near Alicante, and now a car bomb outside Malaga airport. When will all this end? if ever!!! I just hope it does'nt put off the tourist from visiting.
I love spain

Good news! It may be just talk to keep the faith but I just saw a report on the local news here in Madrid about how tourism is up about 3% from last summer. It is believed that ETA and it's tactics of trying to give Spain a negative image abroad is not working. The car bomb in the Malaga airport yesterday that (thank God) was diffused by the bomb squad, is an example of ETA's strategy to try and scare tourists away from Spain. Let's not let them get the best of us! Saludos, jer...

I've got deep feelings for the Basques and no amount of negative actions by a small minority would ever dissuade me from visiting there. It is an absolutely spectacular corner of the world. Anyone who's woken up to the beautiful sight of misty clouds stuck in the Ibaeta Pass looking like whipped cream on top of scoops of lime sherbet will tell you the same. It's evident that ETA's tactics are not thwarting those who love Spain and can't get enough! By the way, ToniG: the woman who "blew herself up" probably didn't plan it that way...she had more explosives and had planned two or three other "operations" in the area. Unfortunately, the by-product of that has been night upon night of "kale borroka" or street violence. Euskaldun

I too truly enjoyed the basque country when I was there for 2 weeks years back, saw a lot of different cities and towns in all 3 regions (Alava, Guipzcoa & Vizcaya)and I did not fear for my safety in the least. Missed that "whipped cream on top of scoops of lime sherbet" illusion thing however, maybe I was not hungry at the time . I remember spending a woderful day in Vitoria Gasteiz (amazing FLASH website at www.vitoria-gasteiz.org/bwturismoi/index_inicio_flash.html) That is the English version. San Sebastin (www.donsnsn.es) also ranks up there in my top 5 favorite cities in all of Spain. Saludos, jer...

For those of you with websites that are finding it difficult to relate to my extremely vague culinary allusions. Here is the explanation: Whipped cream=clouds Lime sherbet=green Pyrenees Mountains I realize it was a stretch, but it was either that or whipped potatoes on top of green peas, which rather grossed me out. Gasteiz is an interesting city. It's all pretty new, and has a pair of interestingly opposite cathedrals. It's totally flat, though, which steals some charm. Donostia is hands down the most beautifully situated large city in Northern Spain...no argument there. Euskaldun

Hey, neighbor! I agree about Donostia and sense from your nickname perhaps a hint of the Basque in you? I spent a week there in a culinary arts leisure program and the food is superb, too. Would love to return someday and will try to get around more when I do.

Hi Sue, yeah, I too would like to know exactly what "Euskaldun" means? Obviously Basque due to the "Euskal" but the word is a stumper. From what I know, the word is the adjective for "Basque" like to say Euskaldun culture or Euskaldun history. Confirmataion anyone? Saludos, jer... p.d. Sue, if you do go back for the "Euskaldun chow", be sure to tupperware loads for me.

Don't know how far Baraboo is from the "backwoods" of Wisconsin, but you guys could actually meet! I would also love to spend more time in "Euskal Herria" I believe they call it. I remember one language teachers' convention at which someone attempted to teach us a little Basque through what is known as "delayed oral response" which included a sort of look and listen but keep still philosophy and a "monkey see/monkey do" (Darn! I forgot the acronym--such is retirement!) Now, all I remember is Txacol and Kaixo. A friend of mine signed a note to me "muxes" which is probably "xoxo"?

Sue, Actually I passed right by Baraboo on Wednesday. I didn't make my usual stop at "Ho-Chunk Casino." I usually do... My contribution in support of gambling of course... Now I have to try winning! It's located about 55 miles north of Madison, WI, and I get by there... or around it... on trips from home in Northern Illinois to our country place in Birchwood, WI, at least a couple times a month. JP (Who loves circus trains, high wire acts, and the aromas of the big top, all part of Baraboo's home of Circus World Museum. It's great!)
